Our Beloved Children
Next to salvation, many would say that children are God’s greatest gift to us. Biologically -- they further the human species; emotionally – they give us joys and heartaches; and spiritually – they remind us of our loving Trinitarian God, Father, Son, and Spirit. The relationship of love in our Trinity is reflected in the love of dad, mom, and child.
I often speak of the most important task of parents with regard to their children. It is not putting food in their stomachs, clothes on their backs or a roof over their heads. The most important task of parents is to pass on their Catholic Faith to their children, to teach them of our Loving God and His plan for them in their lives. The parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith. The gift of faith is eternal, as we prepare our young to be with God forever.
The people of the diocese and parishes are all called to assist the parents in this task of passing on the faith. We assist as teachers, catechists, and aides in the PSR and Catholic school classrooms and at various other parish activities. As we assist, we are always conscious of the responsibility to keep our children and youth safe and are guided by the Policy for the Protection of Children and Young People, adopted in our diocese about 10 years ago. Employees and volunteers who assist with our children and youth are required by the policy to attend a Protecting God’s Children (PGC) awareness session, a three-hour session held at the parish (or a nearby parish) which makes adults aware of how to protect children and helps trainees understand the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse, and steps one can use to prevent child sexual abuse. Beginning July 1, 2012, all volunteers who have regular contact with children or youth will be required to attend (or have attended) the PGC awareness session and have a completed background check prior to beginning the volunteer ministry. For example, a new PSR catechist must have these requirements completed before the first class in the fall. I encourage all adults to take advantage of this PGS awareness session (sessions are offered in English and Spanish), so we can all be more informed and vigilant in protecting the safety of our children. We thank the dedicated facilitators of the sessions for their excellent ministry.
Priests, Deacons, Parish Life Coordinators, Religious Sisters, Directors of Religious Education, teachers, catechists, parents, all adults – let’s work together this summer to encourage, motivate, and assist as many adults as possible to learn some valuable skills in keeping our youth safe. Let us ask our Gentle Jesus to help us make that extra sacrifice to attend (or help someone else to attend) a PGC session. Our children, our beautiful gifts from God, are worth it! Jesus loves them, and us, more than we can ask or imagine!
Nuestros Niños Amados
Lo siguiente a la salvación, muchos dirían que los niños son el mas grande regalo que Dios nos a dado a nosotros. Biológicamente—adelantan la especie humana, emocionalmente—nos dan alegrías y angustias, y espiritualmente—nos recuerdan de nuestro amado Dios Trinitario, Padre, Hijo, y Espíritu. La relación de amor en nuestra Trinidad se refleja en el amor de papá, mamá, e hijo.
Hablo con frecuencia de la tarea más importante de los padres con respecto a sus hijos. No es poner comida en la mesa, ropa en la espalda o un techo sobre sus cabezas. La tarea más importante de los padres es la de pasar su fe católica a sus hijos, para enseñarles de nuestro amor a Dios y Su plan para ellos en sus vidas. Los padres son los principales educadores de sus hijos en la fe. El don de la fe es eterno, como preparamos a nuestros jóvenes para estar con Dios para siempre.
La gente de la diócesis y parroquias todas son llamadas a apoyar a los padres en la tarea de transmitir la fe. Ayudamos como maestros, catequistas y asistentes en PSR (Escuela Parroquial de Religión) y las aulas de clase de las escuelas Católicas y varias otras actividades de la parroquia. Mientras ayudamos, estamos siempre conscientes de la responsabilidad de mantener seguros a nuestros niños y jóvenes y estamos guiados por las Normas de Protección de Niños y la Gente Joven, adoptadas en nuestra diócesis hace 10 años atrás. Empleados y voluntarios que ayudan con nuestros niños y jóvenes son requeridos por norma, de asistir a la Sesión de Concientización de Protegiendo a los Niños de Dios, una sesión de tres horas sostenida en la parroquia (o en una parroquia cercana) la cual hace que los adultos estén concientes de como proteger a los niños y ayuda a los participantes a entender las señales del abuso sexual de niños, los métodos y formas por las cuales los abusadores cometen abuso, y un paso que una persona pueda utilizar para prevenir el abuso sexual de niños. Comenzando el 1ro de julio del 2012, todos los voluntarios que tienen contacto regular con niños o jóvenes, serán requeridos a que asistan (o hayan asistido) a la sesión de concientización de PHD y hayan completado la revisión de antecedes penales antes de comenzar el ministerio como voluntarios. Por ejemplo una nueva catequista de PSR debe tener estos requisitos completos antes de la primera clase en el otoño. Exhorto a todos los adultos a que aprovechen la oportunidad de esta sesión de conciencia de PHD (las sesiones son brindadas en Inglés y Español), para que todos estemos más informados y vigilantes en proteger la seguridad de nuestros niños. Pedimos a nuestro Tierno Jesús que nos ayude a hacer este sacrificio adicional de asistir (o le ayude a otra persona a asistir) a la sesión de PGC. ¡Nuestros niños, nuestro regalo hermoso de Dios, lo merecen! ¡Jesús los ama, y nos ama, másde lo que podamospedir o imaginar!
