The Year of Faith and the New Evangelism
When I was young, I had a certain image of “evangelization.” I thought it only meant when the missionary priests and sisters traveled to far-away lands to teach people about Jesus and His Catholic Church. Vatican Council II and our popes have helped us expand and clarify what it means to evangelize, to spread the Good News, the Gospel of Christ. This evangelization is a key part of our Year of Faith and beyond.
Ralph Martin summarized some key teachings of our popes. Pope Paul VI in On Evangelization in the Modern World wrote: “Evangelization will also always contain – as the foundation, center, and at the same time, summit of its dynamism – a clear proclamation that, in Jesus Christ, the Son of God made man, who died and rose from the dead, salvation is offered to all men, as a gift of God’s grace and mercy.” Blessed John Paul II gave us more specifics, as he taught in The Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People: “The ‘good news’ is directed to stirring a person to a conversion of heart and life and a clinging to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior; to disposing a person to receive Baptism and the Eucharist and to strengthen a person in the prospect and realization of new life according to the Spirit.” Pope Benedict XVI states the importance of this evangelization in his Message for World Mission Day in 2009: “At stake is the eternal salvation of persons, the goal and the fulfillment of human history and the universe.”
Blessed John Paul II, in 1983, began using the term “new evangelization” to refer to a new focus with new “ardor, methods, and expression.” This is our challenge this Year of Faith. How are we called as individuals, families, parishes, and as a diocesan family to evangelize with a new enthusiasm, using new methods, and ministering with new expressions of our faith in Jesus and His Catholic Church? How, by our prayers, words, and actions, do we express our Catholic faith to those who have never heard of the Gospel, to those who devote themselves to their Catholic faith, and to those who seem to have lost an awareness of Jesus and the celebration of the sacraments in their lives?
Let us continue to learn about and to put into practice the new evangelization during this Year of Faith. The Southwest Kansas Register and our website will give more ideas. El Año de la Fe y la Nueva Evangelización
Cuando era joven, tiene una cierta imagen de “evangelización.” Pensé que significaba solo cuando los sacerdotes misioneros y las hermanas viajaban a tierras lejanas para enseñar a la gente a acercarse a Jesús y a Su Iglesia Católica. El Concilio Vaticano II y nuestros papas nos han ayudado a ampliar y clarificar lo que significa para evangelizar, para difundir las buenas noticias, el Evangelio de Cristo. Esta evangelización es una parte mayor de nuestro Año de la Fe y más allá.
Ralph Martin resumió algunas enseñanzas importantes de nuestros papas. Papa Paulo VI en La Evangelización en el Mundo Contemperaría escribió: “La evangelización también debe contener siempre —como base, centro y a la vez culmen de su dinamismo— una clara proclamación de que en Jesucristo, Hijo de Dios hecho hombre, muerto y resucitado, se ofrece la salvación a todos los hombres, como don de la gracia y de la misericordia de Dios.” Santo Padre Juan Pablo II nos dio mas detalles, como enseno en Los Fieles Laicos: “la ‘buena noticia’ tiende a suscitar en el corazón y en la vida del hombre la conversión y la adhesión personal a Jesucristo Salvador y Señor; dispone al Bautismo y a la Eucaristía y se consolida en el propósito y en la realización de la nueva vida según el Espíritu.” El Santo Padre Benedicto XVI declara la importancia de esta evangelización en su Mensaje para La Jornada Mundial de las Misiones 2009: “Está en cuestión la salvación eterna de las personas, el fin y la realización misma de la historia humana y del universo.”
El Santo Padre Juan Pablo II, en 1983, empezó a usar la frase “nueva evangelización” para referirse a un nuevo enfoque con el nuevo “ardor, métodos y expresión.” Este es nuestro desafío de este Año de la Fe. ¿Como somos llamados como individuos, familias, parroquias y como una familia diocesana para evangelizar con entusiasmo nuevo, usando nuevos métodos y ministrando con nuevas expresiones de nuestra fe en Jesús y Su Iglesia Católica? ¿Como, con nuestras oraciones, palabras y acciones, expresamos nuestra fe Católica a quienes nunca han escuchado del Evangelio, a quienes se dedican a su fe Católica y a aquellos que parecen haber perdido la conciencia de Jesús y la celebración de los sacramentos en sus vidas?
