The Election and our Faith
As we near Election Day, we seek help from study, each other, and prayer. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson of the Archdiocese of St. Louis has some thoughts he expressed in a booklet, Viewing election issues through a Lens of Faith (www.archstl.or/vote ). He includes sections on Forming One’s Conscience for Voting, Not All Issues Carry Same Weight, and The Dilemma of Choosing Between Imperfect Candidates. I encourage you to take a look.
Archbishop Carlson’s last section is entitled Concluding Reflections on Forming Conscience. He lists three problems for us:
1) Spending more time listening to political ads than we do listening to God. Suggestions: read the Bible, pray the rosary, pray in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, many others.
2) Not listening to each other with genuine interest when we disagree. Suggestions: sincerely listen to and sacrificially love each other always.
3) Being tempted to disengage because the situation is such a mess. Suggestions: Always hope in Christ; He calls us to be a people of hope.
Archbishop Carlson concludes: “So, let’s remember that the day after the election, Jesus will still be Lord. People will still need to hear the Good News of his saving love. … Faith tells us that we bring a change by being the change we wish to see. Let’s start with this election.”
Let us pray for our candidates and voters, Jesus is with each one of us!
La elección y nuestra fe
Al acercarnos al día de las elecciones, buscamos la ayuda ya sea estudiando, o conversando entre nosotros, o en la oración. Mons. Robert J. La última sección de Mons. Carlson se llama “Reflexiones finales sobre la formación de la conciencia”. El enumera tres problemas para nosotros:
1) Pasar más tiempo escuchando los anuncios políticos que el que pasamos escuchando a Dios. Sugerencias: leer la Biblia, rezar el rosario, rezar en adoración ante el Santísimo Sacramento y muchos otros.
2) No escucharnos el uno al otro con verdadero interés cuando no estamos de acuerdo. Sugerencias: escucharnos entre nosotros sinceramente y con amor sacrificial siempre.
3) Estar tentados de perder interés porque la situación es un desastre. Sugerencias: Esperar siempre en Cristo: Él nos llama a ser un pueblo de esperanza.
Mons. Carlson concluye: “Por lo tanto, recordemos que el día después de la elección, Jesús todavía será el Señor. La gente todavía tendrá que escuchar la buena nueva de su amor salvador. ... La fe nos dice que llevamos el cambio siendo nosotros el cambio que deseamos ver. Vamos a empezar con esta elección”. Oremos por nuestros candidatos y votantes, ¡Jesús está con cada uno de nosotros!
