The ones who will rise
“They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise” (Luke 20:36).
Wow! Jesus vividly describes the resurrection in last Sunday’s Gospel. As we die in this earthly journey, we will rise to be with the Lord. Why does God do this? Because we are children of God, sons and daughters of the Father, brothers and sisters in Christ, all guided by the Holy Spirit!
How do we prepare for this gift? The Lord has taught us for millennia: to love God with all our strength and our neighbor as ourselves (cf. Luke 10:27). How do we do this concretely? As missionary disciples, we evangelize, we catechize in the Catholic faith, we pray, we build community, and we serve.
We in the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City have been discerning how we can grow as disciples of Christ. Pope Francis exhorts us to participate more fully in evangelization with joy. Thank you for your input from my survey request in the September 8th issue of the Southwest Kansas Catholic (and on the website). The priests and Curia staff analyzed the surveys, discerned ideas, and developed draft themes for a Diocesan Pastoral Plan. For example, one draft theme was “Evangelize our people by reaching out to those in need.” Our next step is to trim the number down to 3-5 broad themes that will guide our diocese for the next few years, with God’s grace.
This is Commitment Weekend, as we each renew our stewardship commitment to Jesus and our Catholic Faith. This annual renewal gives us the opportunity and encouragement to ask the Lord how He is calling us. Possibly our personal or familial renewal is to join a prayer group, to serve the youth, to visit the sick, to assist the poor, to commit to tithing/almsgiving, to evangelize with deeds and words, or many other acts of discipleship and love in our family, parish, and community.
Let us ask our Loving Lord how we are called to evangelize with joy. God is preparing us to rise; He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!
Los que se levantarán
Porque ya no pueden morir y son como ángeles; y, habiendo resucitado, son hijos de Dios». (Lucas 20, 36).
¡Wow! Jesús describe vívidamente la resurrección en el Evangelio del domingo pasado. Mientras morimos en este viaje terrenal, resucitaremos para estar con el Señor. ¿Por qué Dios hace esto? Porque somos hijos de Dios, hijos e hijas del Padre, hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, ¡todos guiados por el Espíritu Santo!
¿Cómo nos preparamos para este regalo? El Señor nos ha enseñado durante milenios: amar a Dios con todas nuestras fuerzas y al prójimo como a nosotros mismos (cf. Lc 10, 27). ¿Cómo lo hacemos concretamente? Como discípulos misioneros, evangelizamos, catequizamos en la fe católica, oramos, construimos comunidad y servimos.
Nosotros en la Diócesis Católica de Dodge City hemos estado discerniendo cómo podemos crecer como discípulos de Cristo. El Papa Francisco nos exhorta a participar más plenamente en la evangelización con alegría. Gracias por su aporte en mi solicitud de Encuesta en la edición del 8 de septiembre del Southwest Kansas Catholic (y en el sitio web). Los sacerdotes y el personal de la Curia analizaron las encuestas, discernieron ideas y desarrollaron borradores de temas para un Plan Pastoral Diocesano. Por ejemplo, uno de los temas del borrador era «Evangelizar a nuestro pueblo llegando a los necesitados». Nuestro siguiente paso es reducir el número a 3-5 temas generales que guiarán nuestra diócesis durante los próximos años, con la gracia de Dios.
Este es el Fin de Semana del Compromiso, ya que cada uno de nosotros renovamos nuestro compromiso de administradores hacia Jesús y nuestra fe católica. Esta renovación anual nos da oportunidad y aliento para preguntarle al Señor cómo nos está llamando. Posiblemente nuestra renovación personal o familiar es unirnos a un grupo de oración, servir a los jóvenes, visitar a los enfermos, ayudar a los pobres, comprometernos con el diezmo/la limosna, evangelizar con hechos y palabras, o muchos otros actos de discipulado y amor en nuestra familia, parroquia y comunidad.
Preguntémosle a nuestro amado Señor cómo estamos llamados a evangelizar con alegría. Dios nos está preparando para resucitar, ¡Él nos ama más de lo que podemos pedir o imaginar!
