The Eucharist:
Our Greatest Prayer
The following is the first in a series.
As we complete our Christmas Season today with the Baptism of the Lord, we reflect on the great gift of the Eucharist. Jesus said: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:35). In this time of pandemic, some are celebrating the Eucharist, some watching Holy Mass via livestream or recording. We pray with devotion during Holy Mass, as we worship the Father, through Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit.
The Catechism lists the forms of prayer:
Blessing and Adoration – Blessing is the encounter between God and us as “our prayer ascends in the Holy Spirit through Christ to the Father,” and God’s grace descends to us (CCC #2627). Adoration recognizes that we creatures are humbly praying to our Creator.
Petition – In the Penitential Rite near the beginning of Holy Mass, we, with contrition, ask God to forgive our sins.
Intercession – After the homily, we implore the Lord for our needs in the form of prayers of the faithful (petitions, intercessions).
Thanksgiving – The word Eucharist means thanksgiving. We are grateful to the Lord for the gift of life, faith, salvation, and His Body and Blood.
Praise – “The acceptable gift of perfect praise” is how the Preface II of The Most Holy Eucharist describes our love for God “simply because HE IS” (CCC #2639).
As we begin a new year, let us ask the Lord how we are called to pray more devoutly, especially in the Holy Mass. As health allows, may we return to church to worship. Pope Benedict XVI wrote: “Jesus Christ, who ‘through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God’ (Heb 9:14), makes us, in the gift of the Eucharist, sharers in God's own life. This is an absolutely free gift, the superabundant fulfillment of God's promises. The Church receives, celebrates and adores this gift in faithful obedience.” God is showing us His love. Let us show our love to God.
La Eucaristía-Nuestra Mayor

Amedida que terminamos nuestra Temporada Navideña, hoy con el Bautismo de Nuestro Señor, reflejamos del gran regalo de la Eucaristía. Jesús dijo: “Yo soy el pan de vida. El que viene a mí nunca tendrá hambre y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed” (Juan 6:35). En este tiempo de pandemia, algunos están celebrando la Eucaristía, algunos mirando la Santa Misa vía transmisión en vivo o grabada. Nosotros oramos con devoción durante la Santa Misa, mientras adoramos al Padre, por medio de Jesucristo, y en el Espíritu Santo.
El Catecismo enlista las formas de oración:
Bendición y Adoración – Bendición es el encuentro entre Dios y nosotros mientras “la oración asciende llevada por el Espíritu Santo por medio de Cristo hacia el Padre,” y la gracia de Dios desciende a nosotros (CIC #2627). La Adoración nos reconoce creaturas orando humildemente a nuestro Creador.
Petición - en el Rito Penitencial cerca del comienzo de la Santa Misa, nosotros, con arrepentimiento, pedimos a Dios que perdone nuestros pecados.
Intercesión - Después de la homilía, imploramos a Dios por nuestras necesidades en forma de oración de los fieles (peticiones, intercesiones).
Acción de gracias -La palabra Eucaristía significa dar gracias. Estamos agradecidos con Dios por el regalo de la vida, fe, salvación, y por Su Cuerpo y Sangre.
Alabanza - “El regalo aceptable de alabanza perfecta” es como el Prefacio II de La Santa Eucaristía describe nuestro amor por Dios “por lo que EL ES”. (CIC#2639).
Mientras comenzamos un nuevo año, pidámosle a Dios como somos llamados a orar más devotamente, especialmente en la Santa Misa. Mientras la salud nos lo permita, regresemos a la iglesia para adorarlo. El Papa Benedicto XVI escribió: “Jesucristo, quien ‘se ofreció a Dios por el Espíritu eterno como víctima sin mancha’ (Heb 9:14), nos convierte en el regalo de la Eucaristía, participes en la propia vida de Dios. Este es un regalo gratis en absoluto, el cumplimiento superabundante de las promesas de Dios. La iglesia recibe, celebra y adora este regalo en fiel obediencia.” Dios nos muestra Su Amor. Mostrémosle su amor a Dios.
