Confession, Reconciliation, Conversion, Penance and Forgiveness. Five names for the beautiful gift of healing, as “the Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies” (CCC #1421) forgives our sins. These five names give us different insights into this sacrament (CCC #1423-1442). In this series, as we enter into the liturgical season of Lent, I will discuss each name. First, the name I grew up with: the Sacrament of Confession.
The first reading from the first Sunday of Lent (Year A) is from Genesis, as we hear of the creation of Adam and Eve by God. The Lord God gave our first parents an earthly paradise, but they still disobeyed Him. As we read Genesis further, Adam and Eve never truly confessed their sin. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. Our first step is to ask the Lord for help to truly confess our sins. Thus, my favorite name for the sacrament is “Confession.”
One of my seminary formators had a saying: “Name it, claim it, tame it.” We must name our sin: gossip, lies, disrespect for another, etc. We must claim our sin: I gossiped, I lied, I was disrespectful toward another. We must tame our sin: Jesus, help me to resist the temptation to commit this sin. We need the Lord’s grace to resist temptations; on our own we are too weak.
The Sacrament of Confession. “If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing” (1 John 1:9). May we confess our sins this Lent in this beautiful sacrament. Jesus will give us the strength, He loves us so much!

un hermoso regalo
Confesión, Reconciliación, Conversión, Penitencia y Perdón. Cinco nombres para el don hermoso de sanación, ya que “el Señor Jesucristo, médico de nuestras almas y cuerpos” (CIC #1421) perdona nuestros pecados. Estos cinco nombres nos dan diferentes visiones de este sacramento (CIC #1423-1442). En esta serie, al entrar en el tiempo litúrgico de la Cuaresma, hablaré de cada nombre. Primero, el nombre con el que crecí: el Sacramento de la Confesión.
La primera lectura del primer domingo de Cuaresma (Año A) es del Génesis, cuando escuchamos de la creación de Adán y Eva por Dios. El Señor Dios les dio a nuestros primeros padres un paraíso terrenal, pero aun así lo desobedecieron. A medida que leemos más Génesis, Adán y Eva nunca confesaron verdaderamente su pecado. Adán culpó a Eva y Eva culpó a la serpiente. Nuestro primer paso es pedir ayuda al Señor para confesar verdaderamente nuestros pecados. Por lo tanto, mi nombre favorito para el sacramento es “Confesión”.
Uno de mis formadores de seminario tenía un dicho: “Dímelo, reclámalo, dómalo”. Debemos nombrar nuestro pecado: chismes, mentiras, falta de respeto a otro, etc. Debemos reclamar nuestro pecado: chismeé, mentí, fui irrespetuoso con otro. Debemos domar nuestro pecado: Jesús, ayúdame a resistir la tentación de cometer este pecado. Necesitamos la gracia del Señor para resistir las tentaciones; por nuestra cuenta somos demasiado débiles.
El Sacramento de la Confesión. “Si reconocemos nuestros pecados, él es fiel y justo y perdonará nuestros pecados y nos limpiará de toda maldad” (1 Juan 1:9). Que podamos confesar nuestros pecados esta Cuaresma en este hermoso sacramento. Jesús nos dará la fuerza, ¡Él nos ama tanto!
