The following is Part 4 of a series.
Penance expresses the penitent’s desire to avoid sin, to begin a new life. This may be a “prayer, an offering, works of mercy, service of neighbor, voluntary self-denial, sacrifices, and above all, the patient acceptance of the cross we must bear” (CCC 1460). The Sacrament of Penance is the historical name for this gift to the faithful. In this series, we have looked at the names of this Sacrament: confession, reconciliation and conversion. Our Gospel for the 4th Sunday of Lent (year A) is the story of Jesus healing the man born blind (John 9). Jesus told the man to “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam.” “Siloam” means “sent,” as Jesus sends forth the man to do His will, as the Heavenly Father sent Jesus forth. Similarly, the penitent is sent forth to do a virtuous act to make amends for the sin (CCC 1459). “Such penances help configure us to Christ, who alone expiated our sins once for all” (CCC 1460).
These last weeks of Lent, may we receive the graces of the Sacrament of Penance. Let us be sent forth by the priest to complete our penance, to begin life anew. I feel a peace from the Lord as I leave the confessional. Many say that a great weight has been lifted from them. Let us be blessed by the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist as we prepare for the Easter festivities. Jesus loves us so much!

Sacramento de la Penitencia
La siguiente es la parte 4 de una serie.
La penitencia expresa el deseo del penitente de evitar el pecado, de comenzar una nueva vida. Esta puede consistir en “la oración, en ofrendas, en obras de misericordia, servicios al prójimo, privaciones voluntarias, sacrificios, y sobre todo, la aceptación paciente de la cruz que debemos llevar” (CIC 1460). El Sacramento de la Penitencia es el nombre histórico de este regalo a los fieles. En esta serie, hemos visto los nombres de este Sacramento: confesión, reconciliación y conversión. La próxima vez: perdón.
Nuestro Evangelio para el cuarto domingo de Cuaresma (año A) es la historia de Jesús sanando a un ciego de nacimiento (Juan 9). Jesús le dijo al hombre: “Ve a lavarte en la piscina de Siloé”. “Siloé” significa “enviado”, ya que Jesús envía al hombre a hacer Su voluntad, como el Padre Celestial envió a Jesús. Del mismo modo, el penitente es enviado a hacer algo más para reparar sus pecados (CCC 1459). “Tales penitencias ayudan a configurarnos con Cristo, el Unico que expió nuestros pecados una vez por todas” (CCC 1460).
Que estas últimas semanas de Cuaresma recibamos las gracias del Sacramento de la Penitencia. Seamos enviados por el sacerdote para cumplir nuestra penitencia, para comenzar de nuevo la vida. Siento una paz del Señor al salir del confesionario. Muchos dicen que se les ha quitado un gran peso de encima. Seamos bendecidos por los Sacramentos de la Penitencia y la Eucaristía mientras nos preparamos para las festividades de Pascua. ¡Jesús nos ama tanto!
