I have celebrated the weekend Masses at each one of our 48 parishes in the last 365 days – what a blessing! Celebrating these Holy Masses at each parish united me with each of you as your bishop. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic lives, a great act of unity.
During my first travels to each parish as your new bishop years ago, I took a large map of the diocese. My homily was about our different “levels” of Church: the domestic Church (the family), the parish Church, the diocesan Church (the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City), the universal Church, and the saints and souls in heaven and earth and all creation. Each “level” has a head: the parents, the pastor, the bishop, the pope, and our Loving God.
In gratitude, we share ourselves at each level. We give our gifts of time, abilities and charisms, and our tithing and almsgiving, all in acts of love. A specific part of this overall call by the Lord: How do we financially support our diocesan Church, the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City? First, by the parishes’ tithe: each parish tithes (10%) its ordinary income to the diocesan Church. “Of everything you give me, I will faithfully return a tenth part to you” (Genesis 28:22). Thank you for your generosity and sacrifice! However, this tithe from the parishes accounts for less than half of our budget needs. Other sources of income for our diocesan Church are grants, almsgiving, and investment income.
Proclaim 365 is our new appeal for financial support of our diocesan Church. I ask you to consider a gift of almsgiving to our diocese. "Give alms ... for where your treasure is, there also will your heart be" (Luke 12:33-34). Our Proclaim 365 petition can work like the seeds in the Lord’s Parable of the Sower (Mark 4:1-20). A monthly gift of $30, 60, 100 or another amount can bear great fruit in the Lord’s harvest in our diocese. Our diocesan Church provides ministries for the diocese as a whole that individual parishes cannot, such as seminarian formation, summer youth ministries, tribunal tasks, care for infirmed priests, Pastoral Ministry Formation, and many others. Our beautiful Catholic faith in the Risen Jesus and His Church is based on unity, as Jesus taught “that they all be one” (John 17:21). May we unify our families and our parish Churches with our diocesan Church through Proclaim 365. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this appeal during this Easter season and beyond. Unidos en el Amor
He celebrado Misas de fin de semana en cada una de nuestras 48 parroquias en los últimos 365 días, ¡qué bendición! Celebrar la Santa Misa en cada parroquia me unió a cada uno de ustedes como su obispo. La Eucaristía es la fuente y cumbre de nuestra vida Católica, un gran acto de unidad. Durante mis primeros viajes a cada parroquia como su nuevo obispo hace años, tomé un mapa grande de la diócesis.
Mi homilía fue sobre nuestros diferentes “niveles” de Iglesia: la Iglesia doméstica (la familia), la Iglesia parroquial, la Iglesia diocesana (la Diócesis Católica de Dodge City), la Iglesia universal, y los santos y las almas en el cielo y la tierra y toda la creación.
Cada “nivel” tiene una cabeza: los padres, el pastor, el obispo, el papa y nuestro Dios Amoroso.
En agradecimiento, damos de nosotros mismos en cada nivel. Damos nuestros dones de tiempo, habilidades y carismas, y nuestro diezmo y limosna, todo en actos de amor. Una parte específica de este llamado del Señor: ¿Cómo apoyamos financieramente a nuestra Iglesia diocesana, la Diócesis Católica de Dodge City? Primero, por el diezmo de las parroquias: cada parroquia diezma (10%) de sus ingresos ordinarios a la Iglesia diocesana. “De todo lo que me des, yo te devolveré la décima parte” (Génesis 28:22). ¡Gracias por su generosidad y sacrificio! Les pido que consideren un regalo de limosna a nuestra diócesis. “Repártanlo en limosnas… porque donde está tu tesoro, allí estará también tu corazón” (Lc 12, 33-34). Nuestra petición Proclamar 365 puede funcionar como las semillas en la parábola del sembrador del Señor (Marcos 4:1-20). Una donación mensual de $30, 60, 100 u otra cantidad puede dar un gran fruto en la cosecha del Señor en nuestra diócesis. Nuestra Iglesia diocesana brinda ministerios para la diócesis en su conjunto que las parroquias individuales no pueden, como la formación de seminaristas, ministerios juveniles de verano, tareas de tribunal, cuidado de sacerdotes enfermos, formación para el ministerio pastoral y muchos otros.
