Jesus gave us the priesthood at the Last Supper some 2,000 years ago, as He told His Apostles: “This is My Body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of Me” (Luke 22:19). Ordained Catholic priests follow this teaching at each Mass each day throughout the world. What a blessing that we can be nourished by the Holy Eucharist! I ask for your continued prayers for priestly vocations in the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City. In the last issue of the SKC, I requested you pray a Hail Mary for vocations at meal prayers. Possibly you could add, in addition to mealtime, any communal or individual prayer time. Pray a Hail Mary to begin a meeting, class, event, travels, or at other times.
We have a shortage of priests in the Diocese. Take a look at the statistics – we have:
• 14 Incardinated (our diocesan) Priests with appointments – Ages: eight in their 60s, three in their 50s, one in his 40s, and two in their 30s.
• 11 Missionary Priests with appointments – Ages: three in their 60s, three in their 50s, four in their 40s, and one in his 30s. They are from the USA and four other countries; from four dioceses and two religious orders.
• 13 Retired Priests.
• Two Retired Bishops.
• Thus, we have 15 incardinated Priests and Bishop with appointments, 15 retired Priests and Bishops, and 11 Missionary Priests with appointments.
• 3 seminarians
As you can see, with retirement age at 70 years old, in the next few years our total incardinated priests appointed to parishes will most likely decline in number. Thanks be to God, we have many missionary priests who serve us with great sacrifice and generosity. We are grateful to them and their bishops and religious superiors.
Some ideas to assist boys and single men to hear the Lord’s call to the seminary and ordained priesthood:
• Moms and Dads: Be open to the Lord’s call of a priestly vocation to your son(s). If God calls your son to the priesthood, that will be the vocation that brings him the most joy, fulfillment and happiness. Isn’t that what you want for your son?
• All: Talk to your sons, grandsons, nephews, and boys and single men of the parish: “Have you every thought about the priesthood?” or “I think you would make a good priest” or “I will pray for your vocation.”
• Single men and boys: Humbly listen to the Lord in your prayer. Faithfully follow Jesus’ direction in your life.
• Knights of Columbus and other parish groups: Encourage the boys and single men to consider the priesthood. Ask all men 18 years and older to join the Knights, a great organization of Vocations, Family, Faith, Community and Life.
• Visit a seminary. Write/email a seminarian. Speak to a priest or bishop about the joys of the priesthood.
• Give alms to the seminarian fund of the diocese.
• Be a faithful and active Catholic – as a good role model to follow.
• Pray, pray, pray – Trust in the Great High Priest Jesus Christ.
Only a priest can administer the sacraments of Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Confirmation (at the Easter Vigil, in danger of death, and other times with the bishop’s permission); only a bishop can administer the sacrament of Holy Orders. Priests come from families and parishes – here in the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City, in other dioceses or religious congregations (in the USA or around the world). Jesus said that “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the Master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest” (Luke 10:2). Let us pray that the Good Shepherd will send us more seminarians and priests. Jesus loves us more than we can ask or imagine!
Vocaciones sacerdotales
Los sacerdotes vienen de familias y parroquias
Jesús nos dio el sacerdocio en la Última Cena hace unos 2000 años, como dijo a Sus Apóstoles: “Esto es Mi Cuerpo, que se entrega por ustedes. Hagan esto en memorio mía” (Lucas 22:19). Los sacerdotes católicos ordenados siguen esta enseñanza en cada Misa todos los días en todo el mundo. ¡Qué bendición que podamos nutrirnos de la Sagrada Eucaristía! Pido sus oraciones continuas por las vocaciones sacerdotales en la Diócesis Católica de Dodge City. En la última edición del SKC, les pedí que rezaran un Ave María por las vocaciones en las oraciones de las comidas. Posiblemente se podría agregar, además de la hora de la comida, algún tiempo de oración comunitaria o individual: para iniciar una reunión, clase, evento, viajes, o en otros momentos.
Tenemos escasez de sacerdotes en la Diócesis. Una mirada a las estadísticas: tenemos:
• 14 Sacerdotes Incardinados (nuestros diocesanos) con nombramientos: edades: ocho en sus 60, tres en sus 50, uno en sus 40 y dos en sus 30.
• 11 Sacerdotes Misioneros con nombramientos: edades -- tres en sus 60, tres en sus 50, cuatro en sus 40 y uno en sus 30. De USA y otros cuatro países; de cuatro diócesis y dos órdenes religiosas.
• 13 Sacerdotes Jubilados.
• 2 Obispos jubilados.
• Así, tenemos 15 Sacerdotes y Obispos incardinados con nombramientos, 15 Sacerdotes y Obispos jubilados y 11 Sacerdotes Misioneros con nombramientos.
• 3 seminaristas
Como puede ver, con la edad de jubilación a los 70 años, en los próximos años el número total de sacerdotes incardinados asignados a las parroquias probablemente disminuirá. Gracias a Dios tenemos muchos sacerdotes misioneros que nos sirven con gran sacrificio y generosidad. Estamos agradecidos a ellos, a sus obispos y superiores religiosos.
Algunas ideas para ayudar a los niños y hombres solteros a escuchar el llamado del Señor al seminario y al sacerdocio ordenado:
• Mamás y papás: estén abiertos al llamado del Señor de una vocación sacerdotal para su(s) hijo(s). Si Dios llama a tu hijo al sacerdocio, esa será la vocación que más gozo, plenitud y felicidad le traiga. ¿No es eso lo que quieres para tu hijo?
• Todos: Hablen con sus hijos, nietos, sobrinos, muchachos y solteros de la parroquia, pregunten: “¿Alguna vez has pensado en el sacerdocio?” O “Creo que serías un buen sacerdote” O “Rezaré por tu vocación”.
• Hombres solteros y muchachos: Escucha humildemente al Señor en tu oración. Sigue fielmente la dirección de Jesús en tu vida.
• Caballeros de Colón y otros grupos parroquiales: Anime a los niños y hombres solteros a considerar el sacerdocio. Pida a todos los hombres mayores de 18 años que se unan a los Caballeros, una gran organización de Vocaciones, Familia, Fe, Comunidad y Vida.
• Visita un seminario. Escriba o envíe un correo electrónico a un seminarista. Hable con un sacerdote u obispo sobre los gozos del sacerdocio.
• Dar limosna al fondo de seminaristas de la diócesis.
• Sea un católico fiel y activo, como un buen modelo a seguir.
• Orar, orar, orar – Confía en el Gran Sumo Sacerdote Jesucristo.
Solo un sacerdote puede administrar los sacramentos de Eucaristía, Penitencia, Unción de los Enfermos, Confirmación (en la Vigilia Pascual, en peligro de muerte y otras veces con el permiso del obispo); sólo un obispo puede administrar el sacramento del Orden Sagrado. Los sacerdotes provienen de familias y parroquias: aquí en la Diócesis Católica de Dodge City, en otras diócesis o congregaciones religiosas (en los EE. UU. o en todo el mundo). Jesús dijo que “La cosecha es abundante, pero los abreros son pocos. Rueguen, pues. Al dueño de la cosecha que envie obreros a su cosecha” (Lc 10, 2). Oremos para que el Buen Pastor nos envíe más seminaristas y sacerdotes. ¡Jesús nos ama más de lo que podemos pedir o imaginar!
