What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” the priest asked me. I didn’t have an answer. “Have you ever thought about the priesthood?” The priest saw something in me that I wasn’t aware of at the time. I began to discern (prayerfully figure out) a call from the Lord to the priesthood. This led me to the seminary, the priesthood, and the episcopacy, with the grace of God, and the help of many.
Next weekend, January 20-21, we will have “Called By Name” in each parish in the diocese. The priest will preach about his vocation story, what steps led him to the seminary and priesthood. I have found these testimonials fascinating, how our Loving God has led these men to a new identity as a priest. Similarly, a religious sister’s description of how Jesus led her to a new identity in the consecrated life.
Your priest, with the help of your vocation committee or others, will ask each family to prayerfully consider who in their parish or family may have a special calling from God. What boy, high school guy, or single man in your parish or family would make a good priest? You may have noticed him in prayer, or in a service activity. Similarly, what girl, high school gal, or single woman in your parish or family would make a good religious sister? Prayer and service seems to come naturally for her. Priests and religious sisters come from families and parishes. More details will be given by your priest.
In the Gospel for next weekend, Jesus encouraged Simon and Andrew to “come after me” (Mark 1:17). May we follow Jesus unreservedly, and assist others to listen to His call to the priesthood, religious life, or holy matrimony. Jesus will help us, He loves us so much!

¿Qué vas a hacer con el resto de tu vida?”, me preguntó el sacerdote. No tuve una respuesta. “¿Alguna vez has pensado en el sacerdocio?” El sacerdote vio algo en mí de lo que yo no era consciente en ese momento. Comencé a discernir (descubrir en oración) un llamado del Señor al sacerdocio. Esto me llevó al seminario, al sacerdocio y al episcopado, con la gracia de Dios y la ayuda de muchos.
El próximo fin de semana, del 20 al 21 de enero, tendremos “Llamados por Nombre” en cada parroquia de la diócesis. El sacerdote predicará sobre su historia vocacional, qué pasos lo llevaron al seminario y al sacerdocio. He encontrado estos testimonios fascinantes, cómo nuestro Dios Amoroso ha guiado a estos hombres a una nueva identidad como sacerdotes. De manera similar, la descripción de una hermana religiosa de cómo Jesús la llevó a una nueva identidad en la vida consagrada.
Su sacerdote, con la ayuda de su comité de vocaciones u otros, pedirá a cada familia que considere en oración quién en su parroquia o familia puede tener un llamado especial de Dios. ¿Qué chico, chico de secundaria o hombre soltero de su parroquia o familia sería un buen sacerdote? Quizás lo hayas notado en oración o en una actividad de servicio. De manera similar, ¿qué chica, chica de secundaria o mujer soltera de su parroquia o familia sería una buena hermana religiosa? La oración y el servicio parecen ser algo natural para ella. Los sacerdotes y religiosas provienen de familias y parroquias. Su sacerdote le dará más detalles.
En el Evangelio del próximo fin de semana, Jesús animó a Simón y Andrés “Siganme” (Marcos 1,17). Que sigamos a Jesús sin reservas y ayudemos a otros a escuchar su llamado al sacerdocio, la vida religiosa o el santo matrimonio. Jesús nos ayudará, ¡nos ama mucho!
