"I have called you by name: you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1). Yes, the Lord calls each of us by name, personally, lovingly. What is our response? How does Jesus call us to help others in their own call?
We continue to revitalize our vocation ministry in the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City. In January, we had our “Called By Name Sunday,” when we collected names of possible candidates for the seminary or convent. We have been using the book Hundredfold: A Guide to Parish Vocation Ministry, by Rhonda Gruenewald of Vocation Ministry (https://vocationministry.com/). Rhonda categorizes vocation ministry in four themes: Prayer, Awareness/Education, Youth and Affirmation. This article focuses on Awareness/Education.
Last November we had “5th & 6th Grade Vocation Day,” where we gathered children from these grades from our Catholic Schools, PSR programs and Home Schools. We met at the Cathedral, and had talks, Mass, lunch, workshops and adoration to help educate the boys what a call to the seminary may be like, and the girls what a call to the convent may be like. This was a wonderful day – many thanks to our principals, teachers, catechists, chaperones, priests and religious sisters. A catechist told me later that a student, on the way home, asked, “Just what is a vocation?” This struck me that we need to regularly catechize and educate children, youth and adults as to what it means to be called by God to the priesthood, religious life, or holy matrimony. We cannot take “this vocation stuff” for granted.
Rhonda has many activities for this awareness/education in her book. For example, “book rack and bulletin materials” may be a good way for a parish to start, or to enhance their education of this call by name by the Lord. Join your Parish Vocation Committee/Group (each and every parish is to have a group formed or revitalized by this week, Ash Wednesday!).
Jesus “called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him” (Matthew 4:21-22). Let us assist others to hear their call. Let us live out our own vocation, listening to God daily. Jesus will help us: He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!

Sí, el Señor nos llama a cada uno de nosotros por nuestro nombre, personalmente y con amor. ¿Cuál es nuestra respuesta? ¿Cómo nos llama Jesús a ayudar a otros en su propio llamado? En enero tuvimos nuestro “Domingo de Llamados por Nombre”, cuando recogimos los nombres de posibles candidatos para el seminario o convento. Hemos estado utilizando el libro Hundredfold: A Guide to Parish Vocation Ministry, de Rhonda Gruenewald del Ministerio Vocacional (https://vocationministry.com/). Rhonda categoriza el ministerio vocacional en cuatro temas: Oración, Conciencia/Educación, Juventud y Afirmación. Este artículo se centra en Conciencia/Educación.
En noviembre pasado tuvimos el “Día Vocacional de 5to y 6to Grado”, donde reunimos a niños de estos grados de nuestras Escuelas Católicas, programas PSR y Escuelas en el Hogar. Nos reunimos en la Catedral y tuvimos charlas, misa, almuerzo, talleres y adoración para ayudar a educar a los niños cómo puede ser un llamado al seminario y a las niñas cómo puede ser un llamado al convento. Este fue un día maravilloso – muchas gracias a nuestros directores, maestros, catequistas, acompañantes, sacerdotes y hermanas religiosas. Un catequista me dijo más tarde que un estudiante, de camino a casa, preguntó: “¿Qué es exactamente una vocación?” Me llamó la atención que necesitamos catequizar y educar regularmente a niños, jóvenes y adultos sobre lo que significa ser llamado por Dios al sacerdocio, a la vida religiosa o al santo matrimonio. No podemos dar por sentado “esto de la vocación”.
Rhonda tiene muchas actividades para esta concientización/educación en su libro. Por ejemplo, “los estantes para libros y los materiales para boletines” pueden ser una buena manera para que una parroquia comience o mejore su educación sobre este llamado por nombre del Señor. Únase a su Comité/Grupo Vocacional Parroquial (¡todas y cada una de las parroquias deben tener un grupo formado o revitalizado para esta semana, Miércoles de Ceniza!).
Jesús “los llamó, e inmediatamente ellos, dejando la barca y a su padre, lo siguieron” (Mateo 4,21-22). Ayudemos a otros a escuchar su llamado. Vivamos nuestra propia vocación, escuchando a Dios diariamente. Jesús nos ayudará: ¡Él nos ama más de lo que podemos pedir o imaginar!
