When I arrived 13 years ago as your new bishop, I began a series of “Dinners with the Bishop.” These informal gatherings around the diocese were designed for me to know you, and for you to know me. I asked for input: “What are your hopes and dreams for your parish and your diocese?” The highest priority theme from each dinner was “CHILDREN and YOUTH.” I believe the results would be the same today.
Parents give life to their children. Parents are the primary educators of the Catholic Faith to their children. The parishes, Catholic schools, Parish Schools of Religion and the diocese assist the parents with this sacred responsibility of passing on the Faith. One important aspect is to assist the children to humbly listen to and courageously follow their vocation, the call by God to their future identity. For the boys, high school guys and single men, this call might be to be a priest, or to be a husband and dad. For the girls, high school gals, and single women, this call might be to become a religious sister, or to be a wife and mom.
As we revitalize our vocation ministry in the diocese, we have formed a vocation committee/group in each and every parish. Thank you for your efforts in our “Called By Name” weekend. We are working on promoting vocations in four ways: Prayer, Awareness/Education, Youth and Affirmation. This column looks at a Youth activity from the book Hundredfold: A Guide to Parish Vocation Ministry (each parish has this book): Vocation Jeopardy. What a great way for a class or youth group to have fun and learn about various vocations!
Jesus said: “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). May we assist all our children and youth to listen to Jesus and His call for their lives. Hearing and following His call will bring joy and fulfillment. Jesus will help all of us with our vocation, He loves us so much!

Cuando llegué hace 13 años como su nuevo obispo, comencé una serie de “Cenas con el Obispo”. Los padres dan vida a sus hijos. Los padres son los principales educadores de la fe católica para sus hijos. Las parroquias, las Escuelas Católicas, las Escuelas Parroquiales de Religión y la diócesis ayudan a los padres con esta sagrada responsabilidad de transmitir la Fe. Un aspecto importante es ayudar a los niños a escuchar con humildad y seguir con valentía su vocación, la llamada de Dios a su identidad futura. Para los chicos, los chicos de secundaria y los hombres solteros, este llamado podría ser ser sacerdote o ser esposo y padre.
