In St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus uses the profound parable of the Good Samaritan to answer a simple, but vitally important question: “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29). Sometimes the answer is obvious: Our neighbor is the unemployed person, the elderly woman, the homeless man, the immigrant family. These neighbors need and deserve our help and prayers.
There are other neighbors we may not want to help, or even acknowledge as our neighbor. They might include those who are different than us, those who disagree with us about certain issues, or some candidates running for elected office.
Across America, many people are alienated, violence is breaking out, communities are divided – this is not the teaching of Christ.
I would like to invite you to view each person as your neighbor this election season and beyond. Jesus said “that they may all be one” (John 17:21).
There are many issues to consider when voting; these issues may be placed in five categories:
• Right to Life and the Dignity of the Human Person – this category includes the evils of abortion, racism, physician-assisted suicide, human embryonic research, and other offenses. Let us work toward peace for all. Please support the “Value Them Both” state constitutional amendment for life in Kansas.
• Religious Freedom – this includes supporting the protection of religious freedom, conscience protections, and the right of organizations to place children with adoptive or foster families in accordance with their deeply held religious beliefs.
• Family Life – Marriage between a man and a woman is the nucleus of what we call the domestic church—the family. Let us empower parents to choose the best educational setting for their children, support immigrant families with dignity and respect, and oppose false gender ideologies.
• The Community – this includes supporting health care access that respects human life, human dignity, and the religious beliefs of healthcare providers; supporting social and community services for the poor and those living with a disability, mental illness or addiction; and supporting criminal justice reform.
• The Economy – this includes justice and charity regarding wages and economic initiatives, labor unions, family farms, rural communities, and good stewardship of our natural resources and environment.
Each person is a precious child of God, each worthy of great dignity and respect. Yes, each person is our neighbor. St. Paul teaches us to be “united in heart” (Philippians 2:2). Let us pray devoutly as we prepare to vote. Let us ask our Loving Lord to assist us. Jesus will help us – He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!

En el Evangelio de San Lucas, Jesús usa la parábola profunda del Buen Samaritano para contestar una pregunta simple pero vitalmente importante: “¿Quién es mi prójimo?” (Lucas 10:29). Algunas veces la respuesta es obvia: Nuestro prójimo es la persona sin empleo, la mujer anciana, el hombre sin casa, la familia inmigrante. Nuestro prójimo aquí necesita y merece nuestra ayuda y oraciones.
A veces no queremos ayudar a nuestro prójimo, o tan siquiera reconocerlos como tal. Puede incluir aquellos que son diferentes a nosotros, aquellos que no están de acuerdo con nosotros sobre ciertas cuestiones, o algunos candidatos que se postulan para cargos electos.
En todo Estados Unidos, muchas personas están alejados, la violencia está estallando, las comunidades están divididas – esta no es la enseñanza de Cristo.
Quiero invitarlos a ver a cada persona como su prójimo en esta temporada de elecciones y más allá. Jesús dijo “que todos sean uno” (Juan 17:21).
Hay muchas cuestiones para considerar cuando hay que votar; estas cuestiones se pueden poner en cinco categorías:
• Derecho a la Vida y la Dignidad de la Persona Humana – esta categoría incluye la maldad en el aborto, racismo, el suicidio asistido por un médico, experimentación de embriones humanos, y otras ofensas. • La Comunidad – este incluye en apoyar el acceso a la atención medica que respete la vida humana, la dignidad humana, y las creencias religiosas de los proveedores de atención medica; apoyar a la prestación de servicios sociales y comunitarios para los necesitados y aquellos viviendo con alguna discapacidad, una enfermedad mental o adicción; y apoyar la reforma de la justicia penal.
• La Economía – este incluye la justicia y caridad en cuanto a salarios e iniciativas económicas, sindicatos, granjas familiares, comunidades rurales, y ser buenos administradores de nuestros recursos naturales y ambientales.
Cada persona es un hijo precioso de Dios, cada uno merecedor de gran dignidad y respeto. Si, cada persona es nuestro prójimo. San Pablo nos enseña estar “unidos en el amor, con una misma alma” (Filipenses 2:2). En oración, preparémonos para votar. Pidámosle a nuestro Dios Amoroso que nos ayude. Jesús nos ayudará – ¡Él nos ama más de lo que pedimos o imaginamos!
