The priest prays the Collect for the First Sunday of Lent:
Grant, almighty God,
through the yearly observances of holy Lent,
that we may grow in understanding
of the riches hidden in Christ
and by worthy conduct pursue their effects.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.
We heard the riches hidden in Christ of holy acts: “pray … fast … give alms … perform righteous deeds,” during the Gospel of Ash Wednesday (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18). The Church recommends the Stations of the Cross (the Way of the Cross) as an especially rich prayer during Lent.
Meditating on the 14 Stations with Jesus is a profound way of uniting with Him. The Stations are one of my favorite devotions. Often the parish community prays the Stations on Fridays in Lent, but they can be prayed at any time; individually or with your family or other group. The priest, deacon, or lay person may lead the prayer.
This is also a great way to have the youth involved: have several different youth or children lead the prayer. Sometimes the children or youth have a “Living Stations,” as they “act out” the Stations, with costumes and all, within the church building or outside. At times, a bilingual prayer is held, rotating languages. Many formats, for different ages and from different perspectives, are available in booklets or on the Internet.
This beautiful prayer assists us in “worthy conduct,” as we strive to imitate the service and love of Christ. Trusting in the grace from our Savior, we will then be blessed with a deepening of our relationship with God this Lent and beyond. Let us pray the Stations of the Cross with devotion, and receive Jesus’ hidden riches. He will bless us this Lent; He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!
