Thanks and praise to God for our new Vicar of Christ, Pope Leo XIV! The world is blessed to have a new successor of St. Peter: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). Some initial teachings from Pope Leo:
On Good Shepherd Sunday, Pope Leo reflected: “How important it is to listen! Jesus says, ‘My sheep listen to my voice’ (John 10:27). And I think it is important for all of us to learn how to listen more, to enter into dialogue. First and foremost, with the Lord: always listen to the Word of God. Then also listen to others, to know how to build bridges, to know how to listen without judging, not closing the doors thinking that we have all the truth and no-one else can tell us anything. It is very important to listen to the voice of the Lord, to listen to it, in this dialogue, and to see where the Lord is calling us towards” (Pope Leo XIV, homily, May 11, 2025).
Pope Leo also described the importance of vocations on his first Sunday as pope: “Today brothers and sisters, I therefore have the joy of praying with you and all the People of God for vocations, especially those to the priesthood and consecrated life. The Church has such a great need for them! It is important that young men and women on their vocational journey find acceptance, listening and encouragement in their communities, and that they can look up to credible models of generous dedication to God and to their brothers and sisters” (Pope Leo XIV, Regina Caeli, May 11, 2025).
Pope Leo is a member of the congregation Order of St. Augustine (OSA): “I am an Augustinian, a son of Saint Augustine, who once said, ‘With you I am a Christian, and for you I am a bishop.’ In this sense, all of us can journey together toward the homeland that God has prepared for us” (Pope Leo XIV, first blessing “Urbi et Orbi,” May 8, 2025).
My favorite text other than Scripture is from St. Augustine: “Late have I loved you, beauty so old and so new: late have I loved you. And see, you were within and I was in the external world and sought you there, and in my unlovely state I plunged into those lovely created things which you made. You were with me, and I was not with you. The lovely things kept me far from you, though if they did not have their existence in you, they had no existence at all. You called and cried out loud and shattered my deafness. You were radiant and resplendent, you put to flight my blindness. You were fragrant, and I drew in my breath and now pant after you. I tasted you, and I feel but hunger and thirst for you. You touched me, and I am set on fire to attain the peace which is yours” (St. Augustine, Confessions, Book 10, xxvii, 38).

Oraciones por el Papa León XIV
¡Gracias y alabanzas a Dios por nuestro nuevo Vicario de Cristo, el Papa León XIV! El mundo tiene la bendición de tener un nuevo sucesor de San Pedro: «Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta roca edificaré mi Iglesia» (Mateo 16,18). Algunas enseñanzas iniciales del Papa León:
En el Domingo del Buen Pastor, el Papa León reflexionó: «¡Qué importante es escuchar! Jesús dice: «Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz» (Juan 10,27). Y creo que es importante que todos aprendamos a escuchar más, a dialogar. Ante todo, con el Señor: escuchar siempre la Palabra de Dios. Luego también escuchar a los demás, saber tender puentes, saber escuchar sin juzgar, sin cerrar las puertas pensando que tenemos toda la verdad y que nadie más puede decirnos nada. Es muy importante escuchar la voz del Señor, escucharla, en este diálogo, y ver hacia dónde nos llama el Señor» (Papa León XIV, homilía, 11 de mayo de 2025). El Papa León XIV también describió la importancia de las vocaciones en su primer domingo como Papa: «Hoy, hermanos y hermanas, tengo la alegría de orar con ustedes y con todo el Pueblo de Dios por las vocaciones, especialmente las del sacerdocio y la vida consagrada. ¡La Iglesia las necesita muchísimo! Es importante que los jóvenes, hombres y mujeres, en su camino vocacional encuentren aceptación, escucha y aliento en sus comunidades, y que puedan encontrar modelos creíbles de generosa entrega a Dios y a los hermanos» (Papa León XIV, Regina Caeli, 11 de mayo de 2025).
El Papa León XIV es miembro de la congregación de la Orden de San Agustín (OSA): «Soy agustino, hijo de san Agustín, quien dijo una vez: “Con ustedes soy cristiano y para ustedes soy obispo”. En este sentido, todos podemos caminar juntos hacia la patria que Dios nos ha preparado» (Papa León XIV, primera bendición “Urbi et Orbi”, 8 de mayo de 2025). Mi texto favorito, aparte de las Sagradas Escrituras, es de San Agustín: «Tarde te amé, belleza tan antigua y tan nueva: tarde te amé. Y mira, tú estabas dentro y yo estaba en el mundo exterior y te buscaba allí, y en mi estado desfavorable me sumergí en esas bellas criaturas que creaste. Tú estabas conmigo, y yo no estaba contigo. Las cosas bellas me mantenían lejos de ti, aunque si no existían en ti, no existían en absoluto. Llamaste y clamaste y destrozaste mi sordera. Eras radiante y resplandeciente, ahuyentaste mi ceguera. Eras fragante, y yo inhalé y ahora te anhelo. Te probé, y solo siento hambre y sed de ti. Me tocaste, y me arde la pasión por alcanzar la paz que es tuya» (San Agustín, Confesiones, Libro 10, xxvii, 38).
