We need to give alms as a way of reaching out and touching the suffering flesh of the poor” (Pope Leo, Dilexi Te, 119).
St. Elizabeth of Hungary, religious, was a 13th-century saint known for her care of the poor (her feast day is November 17). The patroness of charities, St. Elizabeth is often artistically represented with a basket of bread for the hungry, symbolizing her deep commitment to those in need.
How do we, as families, parishes and the Diocese, assist the poor? At the Diocesan level, we are blessed with a dedicated and faithful organization that assists those in need. Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas has been helping thousands of people for nearly 60 years in this part of the state.
The Catholic Charities Annual Appeal is coming soon. Rebecca Ford, director of communications and development, will be sending a letter to each priest with more details for parishes to get involved. Almsgiving can also be donated on the website: https://catholiccharitiesswks.org/. I encourage you to support this very inspiring ministry to our brothers and sisters in Christ who need our help. Parishes and parishioners can see Catholic Charities as an extension of their mission to serve those in need.
Pope Leo teaches about generously sharing our alms with the poor:
“Almsgiving at least offers us a chance to halt before the poor, to look into their eyes, to touch them and to share something of ourselves with them. … Almsgiving, however modest, brings a touch of pietas into a society otherwise marked by the frenetic pursuit of personal gain. In the words of the Book of Proverbs: ‘Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor’ (22:9)” (Pope Leo, Dilexi Te, 116).

“Debemos dar limosna como una forma de acercarnos a los pobres y aliviar su sufrimiento” (Papa León XIII, Dilexi Te, 119).
Santa Isabel de Hungría, religiosa del siglo XIII, fue una santa conocida por su cuidado de los pobres (su festividad se celebra el 17 de noviembre). Patrona de la caridad, Santa Isabel suele representarse artísticamente con una cesta de pan para los hambrientos, simbolizando su profundo compromiso con los necesitados.
¿Cómo podemos, como familias, parroquias y diócesis, ayudar a los pobres? A nivel diocesano, contamos con una organización dedicada y fiel que asiste a los necesitados. Caridades Católicas del Suroeste de Kansas ha estado ayudando a miles de personas durante casi 60 años en esta región del estado.

Como dice el Libro de los Proverbios: «Bienaventurados los generosos, porque comparten su pan con los pobres» (22,9) (Papa León, Dilexi Te, 116).
