What are your priorities this First Sunday of Lent? Do you have plans, individually, as a family or as a parish for this Lent and beyond? You may consider one or more of the three priorities of our new Diocesan Pastoral Plan Outline 2026-2031. In this series of columns, I have given an overview, then looked at the mission and the vision of our Pastoral Plan. Today, I look at Priority 1: Call to Holiness.
Call to Holiness: Reflect the person of Jesus through prayer, fruitful reception of the sacraments of the Church, and love for the poor. “Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). The call to holiness was an important theme of Vatican II. All people are called to holiness. All are called to dedicate their lives to God’s way, to the Lord’s path. Jesus is “the Way and the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). Following Jesus will lead us to holiness.
How do we follow Christ? We want to reflect His Sacred Image. A key first step is prayer – being aware of God’s presence, communicating with our Loving Lord. The high point of our prayer is our sacramental life. The Eucharist weekly, or more often, will assist us to be holy. Some make it a habit to celebrate at least one weekday Mass each week during Lent. When we fall, when we are not holy, then Jesus gives us the great gift of the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Penance/Confession/Forgiveness/Conversion to make us holy again. St. Paul taught that you are made a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). We also want to reach out to each other, especially in our love for the poor. The poor may be materially poor, ill, suffering, addicted, or lonely. If we see Christ in each person we encounter, we are on the road to holiness. Ask God how you may concretely assist the poor this Lent.
Let us be holy, as the Lord our God is holy, with His help. May we experience God’s love this Lent and beyond, as Jesus assists us to be holy.

¿Cuáles son sus prioridades este primer domingo de Cuaresma? ¿Tienen planes, individualmente, en familia o como parroquia, para esta Cuaresma y más allá? Pueden considerar una o más de las tres prioridades de nuestro nuevo Plan Pastoral Diocesano 2026-2031. En esta serie de columnas, he presentado una visión general y luego he analizado la misión y la visión de nuestro Plan Pastoral. Hoy, me centro en la Prioridad 1: Llamado a la Santidad.
Llamado a la Santidad: Reflejar la persona de Jesús a través de la oración, la recepción fructífera de los sacramentos de la Iglesia y el amor a los pobres. «Sean santos, porque yo, Dios de ustedes, soy Santo» (Levítico 19,2). El llamado a la santidad fue un tema importante del Concilio Vaticano II. Todas las personas están llamadas a la santidad. Todos están llamados a dedicar su vida al camino de Dios, al camino del Señor. Jesús es «el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida» (Juan 14,6). Seguir a Jesús nos llevará a la santidad.
¿Cómo seguimos a Cristo? Queremos reflejar Su Sagrada Imagen. Un primer paso clave es la oración: ser conscientes de la presencia de Dios y comunicarnos con nuestro amado Señor. El punto culminante de nuestra oración es nuestra vida sacramental. La Eucaristía semanal, o con mayor frecuencia, nos ayudará a ser santos. Algunos tienen el hábito de celebrar al menos una misa entre semana durante la Cuaresma. Cuando caemos, cuando no somos santos, Jesús nos da el gran don del Sacramento de la Reconciliación/Penitencia/Confesión/Perdón/Conversión para santificarnos de nuevo. San Pablo enseñó que somos una "creación nueva" (2 Corintios 5,17). También queremos acercarnos unos a otros, especialmente en nuestro amor por los pobres. Los pobres pueden ser materialmente pobres, estar enfermos, sufrir, tener adicciones o sentirse solos. Si vemos a Cristo en cada persona que encontramos, estamos en el camino de la santidad. Pregúntale a Dios cómo puedes ayudar concretamente a los pobres esta Cuaresma. Seamos santos, como el Señor nuestro Dios es santo, con su ayuda. Que podamos experimentar el amor de Dios en esta Cuaresma y más allá, mientras Jesús nos ayuda a ser santos.
