The three languages to know Jesus
Pope Francis wrote “Do we truly pray? Without an abiding relationship with God, it is difficult to live an authentic and consistent Christian life” (Twitter@Pontifex, Oct. 1, 2013). Prayer is the theme of this Stewardship Renewal issue of the Register.
I preached to our Catholic School teachers last month that our uniting with Christ is with our head, heart, hands and feet. Pope Francis taught a similar theme last week: “the three languages needed to know Jesus: that of the mind, that of the heart, and that of action” (September 26, 2013).
This Year of Faith, we have emphasized the catechetical aspects of knowing Jesus in our mind: learning from our parents and catechists, studying the Vatican II documents and other teachings of our faith, and using other ways to grow in the knowledge of our Savior Jesus. The Pope said: “We know the Son of God, who came to save us, we understand the beauty of the history of salvation, of the love of the Father, studying the Catechism.”
Also, “we need to know Jesus with the heart - in prayer, in dialogue with Him.” This touching of the heart takes time – each day. Grab a few minutes each day of silent prayer with our Loving Lord, stop by the church to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, pray while you are taking a walk. To love someone is to spend time with him/her. Let us spend time with Jesus in our heart.
Finally, “there is a third way to know Jesus: it is by following Him. Go with Him, walk with Him. … to go, to walk along the streets, journeying.” This language uses our hands and feet to do God’s will. A good place to start is with forgiveness and service. If someone has hurt us, or we have hurt someone, it is time for reconciliation – this is a prayer that strengthens our relationship with Jesus. Service is putting our faith into action, in our families, parishes and communities, especially with the least ones.
During this year’s Stewardship Renewal, let us use these languages to know Jesus: learning about the Lord, opening our heart to Him in prayer, putting our faith into action in the world. Jesus will tenderly assist us: He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!
Los Tres Lenguajes para Conocer a Jesús
El Papa Francisco escribió “¿Rezamos de verdad? Sin una relación constante con Dios, es difícil llevar una vida cristiana auténtica y coherente” (Twitter @Pontifex, 1 de octubre, 2013). La oración es el tema de esta edición del Register de Renovación de Compartir.
Predique a nuestros maestros y maestras de las Escuelas Católicas el mes pasado que nuestra unión con Cristo es con nuestra cabeza, corazón y manos/pies. El Papa Francisco enseño un teme similar la semana pasada: “los tres lenguajes necesarios para conocer a Jesús, a saber: el de la mente, el del corazón y el de la acción” (26 de septiembre, 2013).
Durante este Año de la Fe, hemos enfatizado los aspectos catequéticos de conocer a Jesús en nuestra mente: aprender de nuestros padres y catequistas, estudiando los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II y otras enseñanzas de nuestra fe y el uso de otras formas de crecer en el conocimiento de Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador. El Papa dijo: “Conocemos al Hijo de Dios, que ha venido para salvarnos; comprendemos toda la belleza de la historia de la Salvación, del amor del Padre, estudiando el Catecismo”
También, “necesitamos conocer a Jesús con el corazón, en la oración, en el diálogo con Él.” Este toque del corazón lleva tiempo – cada día. Toma unos cuantos minutos de oración en silencio con nuestro Señor Cariñoso, pase por la iglesia para visitar a Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento, ore mientras esté tomando un paseo. Amar a alguien es pasar tiempo con él/ella. Déjenos pasar tiempo con Jesús en nuestro corazón.
Por último, “Hay un tercer camino para conocer a Jesús: es el seguimiento. Ir con Él, caminar con Él”. Este lenguaje usa nuestras manos y pies para hacer la voluntad de Dios. Un lugar bueno para empezar es con el perdón y el servicio. Si alguien nos ha lastimado o hemos lastimado a alguien, es tiempo de reconciliación – esta es una oración que fortalece a nuestra relación con Jesús. Servicio es poner nuestra fe en acción, en nuestras familias, parroquias y comunidades, especialmente con los menos.
Durante la Renovación de Compartir de este año, vamos a usar estos lenguajes para conocer a Jesús: aprendiendo acerca del Señor, abriendo nuestro corazón a él en oración, poniendo nuestra fe en acción en el mundo. Jesús nos asistirá tiernamente: ¡Él nos ama más de lo podemos pedir o imaginar!
