Hospitality and Zacchaeus

I was the priest spiritual director for a group of pilgrims to Rome in 2005. We went to the Wednesday audience of Pope Benedict XVI, seeking to see him. We had arrived the previous day after the long trip from Kansas. Excitement was building as we walked from our hotel to St. Peter’s Square. One of our group, Sylvia, was in a wheelchair, recovering from surgery. It was my turn to push her wheelchair. As we started going through the security checkpoints, the staff let Sylvia and me through gate after gate, eventually to the section reserved for persons with disabilities. Amazingly, we were only 50 feet from the pope’s chair! We all applauded as Pope Benedict arrived, and he gave his talk in several languages. At the end of his teaching, he invited us on the stage to greet him! I assisted Sylvia to the Holy Father, and he received her with joy (see the photo on Page 10). Little did we know that in seeking Pope Benedict, he would receive us personally.
Our gospel from St. Luke last Sunday described a much more profound seeking and receiving. Zacchaeus “was seeking to see who Jesus was” (Luke 19). Zacchaeus had heard many stories of this prophet and miracle worker, and wanted to meet him. He had a strong attraction to the teachings of Jesus, as reported by others. Now was the chance to actually see him in person.
“Jesus looked up and said, ‘Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.’ And he came down quickly and received him with joy.” What amazement! What happiness! Zacchaeus wasn’t just going to see Jesus, he was going to have Him over to his house, to have a meal with Him, to speak personally with Jesus! Notice how Jesus invited Zacchaeus to invite Him into his life.

Jesus invites us, to invite Him into our lives.
Jesus invites you, to invite Him into your life.
The first step is from Jesus. His grace pours down on us to invite us, to call us, as He loves us. Jesus does not force Himself on us. The next step is for our response. We pray it is like Zacchaeus, to seek and receive Jesus with joy. Jesus is our Savior, our Brother, our Friend. Let us respond to His grace and invite Him deeper into our lives.
The next step is to invite others to share our deepening intimacy with Jesus. This inviting is part of the New Evangelization, our call by Jesus and His Catholic Church to go and proclaim the Good News of Jesus with great joy. It is the call of our mission as the Baptized.
But why don’t we invite?: At times we are afraid, shy, anxious about being rejected, selfish, narcissistic, too “busy,” don’t want to get involved, …
Why should we invite?: Jesus calls us to invite, unconditional love, hospitality – “I love you,” being generous, to build up community, …
This process is the key to Hospitality, another of our pillars of Stewardship. We reflect on the virtue of hospitality during our Stewardship Renewal this Fall. “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:1). Let us love each other by inviting, sharing, receiving, loving, as Jesus did, as Pope Benedict did. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and your family to share your time and ability in your parish (and beyond) in Jesus’ way of hospitality. You love us, Jesus, more than we can ask or imagine!
Hospitalidad y Zaqueo
Yo era el sacerdote director espiritual para un grupo de peregrinos a Roma en 2005. Fuimos a la audiencia del miércoles del Papa Benedicto XVI, esperando a ver lo. Habíamos llegado el día anterior después del largo viajo desde Kansas. La emoción crecía mientras caminábamos de nuestro hotel a la Plaza de San Pedro. Una de nuestro grupo, Sylvia, estaba en silla de ruedas, recuperándose de una cirugía. Era mi turno para empujar su silla de ruedas. Cuando empezamos a pasar por los controles de seguridad, los guardias dejaron que Sylvia y yo pasáramos por puerta tras puerta, finalmente llegando a la sección reservada para las personas con discapacidades. ¡Sorprendentemente, estábamos a solo 50 pies de la silla del papa! Todos aplaudimos cuando llego el Papa Benedicto, y el dio su discurso en varios idiomas. ¡Al final de su enseñanza, nos invitó a todos al escenario para saludarlo! Asistí a Sylvia al Santo Padre, el la recibió con alegría (vea la foto, página 10). No sabíamos muy bien que al buscar el Papa Benedicto XVI, que nos recibiría personalmente.
Nuestro evangelio de San Lucas describe a un buscar y recibir más profundo. Zaqueo “quería ver cómo era Jesús” (Lucas 19). Zaqueo había escuchado muchas historias de este profeta y trabajador milagroso y lo quería conocer. Tenía una atracción fuerte a las enseñanzas de Jesús, según informado por otros. Ahora era la oportunidad de verlo en realmente en persona.
“Jesús miro hacia arriba y dijo, ‘Zaqueo, baja en seguida, pues hoy tengo que quedarme en tu casa.’ Zaqueo bajo rápidamente y lo recibió con alegría.” ¡Qué emoción! ¡Qué alegría! ¡Zaqueo no solo iba a ver a Jesús, iba a tenerlo en su casa, iba a tener una cena con Él, iba a hablar personalmente con Jesús! Note como Jesús invito a Zaqueo para invitarlo a Él a su vida.

Jesús nos invita a que lo invitemos a Él a nuestras vidas.
Jesús te invita a que lo invites a Él a tu vida.
El primer paso fue de Jesús. Su gracia se derrama sobre nosotros para invitarnos, a llamarnos, para amarnos. Jesús no se fuerza a nosotros. El siguiente paso es para nuestra respuesta. Oramos que pueda ser como Zaqueo, buscar y recibir a Jesús con alegría. Jesús es nuestro Salvador, nuestro Hermano, nuestro Amigo. Vamos a responder a Su gracia e invitarlo más profundo en nuestras vidas.
El siguiente paso es de invitar a otros a compartir nuestra intimidad profunda con Jesús. Esta invitación es parte de la Nueva Evangelización, nuestro llamado por Jesús y Su Iglesia Católica de ir y proclamar la Buena Nueva de Jesús con gran alegría. Es un llamado de nuestra misión como los bautizados.
¿Pero, porque no invitamos?: A veces sentimos miedo, timidez, nos preocupamos de ser rechazados, egoísta, narcisista, muy “ocupados,” no nos queremos involucrar,…
¿Porque deberíamos invitar?: Jesús nos llama a invitar, amar incondicionalmente, hospitalidad—“Yo te amo,” ser generosos, a crear comunidad,…
Este proceso es la clave a la Hospitalidad, otro de nuestros pilares de Compartir durante nuestra Renovación de Compartir este otoño. “No dejen de practicar la hospitalidad, pues saben que algunos dieron alojamiento a ángeles sin saberlo” (Hebreos 13:2). Vamos a amar el uno al otro por invitar a compartir, recibir, amar, como lo hizo Jesús, como lo hizo el Papa Benedicto. Pide que el Espíritu Santo te guie a ti y a tu familia para compartir tu tiempo y talento en tu parroquia (y más allá) en la manera de hospitalidad de Jesús. Tú nos amas, Jesús, más que podemos pedir o imaginar.
