Pope Francis and Family
I was blessed to attend four events with Pope Francis in Philadelphia at the end of his journey to the United States. What an extraordinary presence he has! Our Holy Father just radiates love, welcome, and the joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
In my Sources of Truth column in this issue of the SKC (Page 19), I give instructions for finding Pope Francis’ documents online. I urge you to read them with an eye of faith. At times, we hear from the media only selected quotes, with comments coming from a political or other perspective. I suggest to ponder his teachings through a lens of the Gospel. What is Jesus saying to us in this teaching of His Vicar?
I was very touched by the end of his talk at the Prayer Vigil for the Festival of Families at the end of the World Meeting of Families:
“I don’t want to keep on talking because it will go on too long, but I did want to stress two little points about the family. I would ask you to think about them. We have to care in a special way for children and for grandparents. Children and young people are the future; they are our strength; they are what keep us moving forward. They are the ones in whom we put our hope. Grandparents are a family’s memory. They are the ones who gave us the faith, they passed the faith on to us.
“Taking care of grandparents and taking care of children is the sign of love – I’m not sure if it is the greatest, but for the family I would say that it is the most promising – because it promises the future. A people incapable of caring for children and caring for the elderly is a people without a future, because it lacks the strength and the memory needed to move forward.
“The family is beautiful, but it takes hard work; it brings problems. In the family, sometimes there is fighting. The husband argues with the wife; they get upset with each other, or children get upset with their parents. May I offer a bit of advice: never end the day without making peace in the family. In the family the day cannot end in fighting. May God bless you. May God give you strength. May God inspire you to keep moving forward. Let us care for the family. Let us defend the family, because there our future is at stake. Thank you. God bless you, and please pray for me.”
Let us pray and work for strong marriages and united families. The Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph will help: they, and Pope Francis, loves us more than we can ask or imagine!
El papa Francisco y la familia
Tuve la bendición de asistir a cuatro eventos con el papa Francisco en Filadelfia al final de su viaje a los Estados Unidos. ¡Qué extraordinaria presencia que tiene! ¡Nuestro Santo Padre irradia el amor, la acogida, y la alegría del Evangelio de Jesucristo!
En mis columna “Fuentes de verdad” en esta edición de la SKC, doy instrucciones para encontrar los documentos del papa Francisco en línea. Les insto a leerlos con el ojo de la fe. A veces, escuchamos de los medios de comunicación sólo citas seleccionadas, con comentarios que vienen de una perspectiva política o de otra. Sugiero reflexionar sobre sus enseñanzas a través de una óptica evangélica. ¿Qué nos está diciendo Jesús a nosotros en esta enseñanza de su Vicario?
Yo estuve muy conmovido por la parte final de su charla en la Vigilia de Oración para el Festival de las Familias, al final del Encuentro Mundial de las Familias:
“No quiero seguir hablando porque va a durar mucho tiempo, pero yo quería hacer hincapié en dos pequeños puntos alrededor de la familia. Les pediría que piensen en ellos. Tenemos que cuidar de manera especial de los niños y los abuelos. Los niños y jóvenes son el futuro; son nuestra fuerza; son lo que nos mantienen en movimiento hacia adelante. Es en ellos en quien ponemos nuestra esperanza. Los abuelos son la memoria de una familia. Ellos son los que nos han dado la fe, nos transmitieron la fe. El cuidado de los abuelos y el cuidado de los niños es el signo del amor; no estoy seguro de si es el mejor, pero para la familia, yo diría que es el más prometedor, porque promete el futuro. Un pueblo incapaz de cuidar a los niños y los ancianos es un pueblo sin futuro, porque carece de la fuerza y la memoria necesarias para seguir adelante. La familia es hermosa, pero hay que trabajar duro; conlleva problemas. En la familia, a veces hay luchas. El marido discute con la mujer; se enojan el uno con el otro, o los niños se enojan con sus padres. Permítanme un consejo: nunca terminar el día sin hacer la paz en la familia. En la familia el día no puede terminar en enfrentamientos. Que Dios los bendiga. Que Dios les dé fuerza. Que Dios les inspire a seguir adelante. Cuidemos la familia. Defendamos la familia, ya que nuestro futuro está en juego. Gracias. Que Dios los bendiga, y por favor oren por mí “.
Oremos y trabajemos para tener matrimonios sólidos y familias unidas. La Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José los ayudarán: ¡ellos, y el papa Francisco, nos aman más de lo que podemos pedir o imaginar!
