Joy blooms from misery
Suffering around the Diocese has abounded in these Advent days, from the deaths of loved ones, through debilitating physical illness, to the school-room anxieties of a shy 5th grader. It thus calls for some doing to celebrate Christmas this year.
Father Ed Dowling, a St. Louis Jesuit, wrote a short article in 1954 called, How to Enjoy Being Miserable. The title alone commands attention.
The joys that first Christmas were accompanied by, if not rooted in, misery, he said: the damp, cold night, the inhospitality that poor relatives always get, the discomfort and dirt of the donkey, the road, and the cave, the loneliness and the awe that young mothers have always felt at the coming of their first born. Who will say that these are not the things that have brought to a sore, sick world the merriment and the joys of Christmas?
May you enjoy a miserable Christmas! he added with a flourish. No other kind can really be merry.
The article stopped me dead when I read it some months ago. Even now I have not moved beyond it. It thus calls for some doing to celebrate Christmas this year.

El sufrimiento alrededor de la Diócesis ha abundado en estos días de Adviento, desde la muerte de seres queridos, enfermedad de debilitamiento físico, a las ansiedades en las aulas de clases de un tímido estudiante de 5to grado. Esto por lo tanto, nos llama a hacer algo por celebrar la Navidad este año.
El Padre Ed Dowling, un Jesuita de San Luis, escribió un corto artículo en 1954 llamado, Como Disfrutar Siendo Miserable. El título solo pide atención.
Las alegrías que acompañan las primeras Navidades, no están basadas en miseria,, el dijo: la noche fría, empapada, la inhospitalidad que los pobres familiares siempre reciben, la incomodidad y el sucio del burro, el camino, y la cueva, la soledad y el temor que las madres jovenes siempre han tenido en la venida de su primer bebé. ¿Quién diría que no son estas las cosas que han traído a un mundo irritado, enfermo, la alegría y júbilo de la Navidad?
¡Que ustedes disfruten una Navidad miserable! El agregó esplendorosamente. No hay otra manera que realmente sea feliz.
El artículo me dejó muerto cuando lo lei algunos meses atrás. Aún ahora no he ido más allá. Esto por lo tanto nos llama a hacer algo por celebrar la Navidad este año.
