‘Health care’ and the culture of death
It has been 37 years since the Supreme Court decision of Roe v Wade, 37 years of sanitized killing, at the rate of more than a million unborn babies a year. The best estimates are that we have killed nearly 50 million babies since 1973.
Pope John Paul II spoke often of our culture of death, so bent, as it is, on obscuring the truth. We have allowed it to grow up around us. We breathe it in every day. We are all infected by it. Our eyes glaze over at the numbers, over a million deaths a year, and 50 million in 37 years. We are too numb morally to understand the simple truth of them.
We are not talking about philosophy here, or religion, or ideology, or right-wing and left-wing views. We are talking about a scientific fact: the developing embryo or fetus is a living, growing human being. That is the scientific fact. To take that little person’s life is to kill him: that is the human truth.
For us Catholics we are also talking about what is also a fundamental fact of our faith. The gift of Revelation tells us that no one has a right to take an innocent life, not at the beginning of life, and not at the ending of life. For 2,010 years we have taught that human life is sacred from conception to natural death. That is the religious truth, to be added to the human truth, and to be added to the scientific truth.
There are those who call themselves Catholic who agree with this, and say that they are personally opposed to unjust public policies like abortion. But they go on to say that they are unwilling to impose their view on the rest of the country.
And look at what they are now poised to do with health care reform. They cannot bring their particular view into the secular public square, but they have no qualms about using the law to impose another particular view on all the rest of us. They could be the deciding votes in forcing their fellow Catholics to fund abortion through tax dollars.
As Supreme Knight Carl Anderson recently put it: While professing that they cannot impose their conscience on anyone else, (they) seem to have little hesitation about imposing an immoral political view – one they claim to oppose in principle – on the conscience of Catholic citizens.
Think of it: a law that would force millions to violate their conscience by paying their taxes. What manner of women and men are they that they could do this? What manner of women and men are we that we could allow them to do this? Thirty-seven grim years of growing moral numbness have brought us to this unlovely pass. May the Lord of the Impossible lead us out of it.

Hemos matado alrededor de 50
milliones de bebés desde 1973
Serían 37 años en unos cuantos días, 37 años desde la desición de la Corte Suprema del caso Roe v Wade, 37 años del asesinato estirilizado, a un precio por mas de un millón de bebés sin nacer al año. Las mejores estimaciones establecen que hemos matado alrededor de 50 milllones de bebés desde 1973.
El Papa Juan Pablo II habló a menudo de nuestra cultura de la muerte tan desviada, como está, oscureciendo la verdad. Hemos permitido que esta crezca alrededor de nosotros. Lo inhalamos cada día. Estamos infectados por ello. Nuestros ojos brillan sobre los números, sobre un millón de muertes al año, y 50 millones en 37 años. Estamos tán adormecidos moralmente para entender la realidad de ellos.
No estamos hablando sobre filosofía aquí, o religión, o ideología, o vistas al lado derecho o izquierdo. Estamos hablando sobre un hecho científico: el desarrollo del embrión o del feto, es un ser humano viviente. Ese es el hecho científico. Para tomar la vida de esa pequeña persona es matándola: esa es la verdad humana.
Para nosotros los Católicos, también estamos hablando sobre lo que también es un hecho fundamental de nuestra fe. El don de la Revelación nos dice que nadie tiene el derecho de tomar una vida inocente, ni al principio de la vida ni al final de la vida. Por 2010 años se nos ha enseñado que la vida humana es sagrada desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. Esa es la verdad religiosa, para ser añadida a la verdad humana, y para ser añadida a la verdad científica.
Existen aquellos que se hacen llamar Católicos que están de acuerdo con esto, y dicen que ellos se oponen personalmente a las injustas políticas públicas como el aborto. Pero ellos van a decir que ellos no están dispuestos a imponer sus puntos de vista al resto del país.
Y miren en lo que ahora ellos están dispuestos a hacer con la reforma del cuidado a la salud. Ellos no pueden traer su opinión particular a la mesa pública, pero ellos no tienen escrúpulos sobre el uso de la ley para imponer otra vista particular sobre el resto de nosotros. Ellos podrían ser los votos decisivos en forzar a sus amigos Católicos a generar fondos por medio del dinero de los impuestos.
Como Caballero Supremo Carl Anderson, recientemente dijo: Mientras estén aceptando que ellos no pueden imponer su conciencia sobre cualquiera, (ellos) parecieran tener una pequeña duda sobre la imposición de un vista política indecente- la cual ellos reclaman oponerse en principio – en la conciencia de los ciudadanos Católicos.
Piense en ello: una ley que forzaría a millones a violar su conciencia pagando sus impuestos. ¿Qué tipo de mujeres y hombres serían los que pudieran hacer esto? ¿Que tipo de mueres y hombres somos que permitiriamos que ellos hagan esto? 37 años severos de creciente inmovilidad moral nos ha traido a este desagradable pasado. Que el Señor de lo Imposible nos guie a alejarnos de eso.
