Greed creates 'turbulence
of mind and heart'
Our annual stewardship day last weekend turned my thoughts to how we use and misuse money. It turned my thoughts to Greed. Our Spiritual Tradition tells us that one in the grip of greed will show certain signs or traits: the Filiae Avaritiae, it called them, the Daughters of Greed.
If a person is especially bent on keeping what he has, in protecting what she has, in hoarding it, there will inevitably appear an obduratio contra misericordiam. Literally, that means to become hard, to grow hard, to develop a fingernail of a cocoon around his heart. Figuratively, it means to lose her natural feeling. Artificially devoid of feeling, such a one will be impervious to all appeals for mercy. He simply does not see the one in need.
If such a woman is especially bent on acquiring wealth, and its consequent security and status, there will inevitably appear another sign. Inside such a woman, in that welter of thoughts, feelings, and wishes we call affections, there will be an unceasing inquietudo. Literally, this means a storm. Figuratively, it means an inner restlessness, or a turbulence of mind and of heart. She becomes the complete worrier, whose anxiety will not be tempered by reality. She hires night watchmen to watch the night watchmen.
If such a man is especially bent on acquiring wealth, there is one overmastering skill that he will have developed. It will appear in all that he says and in all that he does. He will have perfected what our ancestors called Dolus. He will show a practiced canniness, a shrewdness, a craftiness in all his dealings. He becomes remarkably inventive in achieving his own ends. While this is not a bad thing in itself, the greedy man injects a large measure of guile, duplicity, and deceit into it. He becomes a Master of the hard, shrewd, weaving of the tangled web in order to confuse and to mislead.
There are other siblings in this sorry family…violentia, fallacia, perjurium, fraus, and proditio. But two daughters are enough for now. It is best to take this House of Greed in small doses.

Nuestro dia anual del compartir durante el pasado fin de semana me hizo pensar en como usamos y hacemos mal uso del dinero. Mis pensamientos giraron hacia la Avaricia. Nuestra Tradición Espiritual nos dice que el que está apegado a la avaricia mostrará ciertas señales o rasgos: el filiae avatiae (la desendencia de la avaricia), las llamaron: las Hijas de la Avaricia.
Si una persona está inclinada especialmente a quedarse con todo lo que tiene, en proteger lo que ella tiene, en atesorarlo todo, alli inevitablmente aparecerá un obduratio contra misericordiam (la dureza del Corazón que impide darle al necesitado). Literalmene, esto significa ser duro, crecer duro, y desarrollar una uña de un capullo alrededor de su Corazón. Figurativamente, esto significa perder su sentimiento natural. Artificialmente, carente de sentimiento, como el que será insensible a todas las apelaciones de misericordia. Aquella persona simplemente no ve a ninguna persona con necesidad.
Si una mujer está especiamente para adquirir riqueza, y su consecuente seguridad y estatus, alli inevitablemente aparecerá otro signo. Dentro de esta mujer, en ese bochorno de pensamientos, sentimiento, y deseos, que llamamos afecciones.habrá una incesante inquietudo (inquietude). Literalmente esto significa una tormenta.. Figurativamente, esto siginica a un descanso interno, o una turbulencia de mente y de Corazón. Ella se convierte en una completa guerrera, cuya ansiedad no será manejada por la realidad. Ella contrata vigilantes de la noche para vigilar a los vigilantes nocturnos .
Si un hombre está especialmente inclinado a adquirir riqueza, hay una habilidad super dominante que él habrá desarrollado. Eso aparecerá en todo lo que él diga y todo lo que él haga. Él tendrá perfección en lo que nuestros antepasados llaman Dolus (culpa). Él mostrará una astuta sagacidad en todo su trato. Él se hace notablemente creativo en el logro de sus propias metas.

Mientras esta no es una cosa mala en sí misma, el hombre avaro inyecta una medida grande de astucia, duplicidad, y engaño en ello. Él se hace un Maestro del difícil, perspicacia, el tejido de la red enredada a fin de aturdir y engañar.
Hay otros hermanos y hermanas en esta triste familia…violentia, fallacia, perjurium, fraus, y proditio (violencia..falacia, perjurio, fraude y traición). Pero las dos hermanas son suficientes por ahora. Es mejor tomar esta Casa de Avaricia en pequeña dósis.
