‘Join with me in thanking God’
for our new bishop
I have seen only copies, never a real Rouault painting. But since I was a boy in high school, I have been fascinated by the work of this gifted man who died in 1958.
Whether the subject was the clown, or the prostitute, or the workers of Paris, or the suffering Christ, his art was one long meditation on the Incarnation. His Christ was the suffering servant who carried the burdens of the poor and the marginalized of France in the last century. This is the reason for his darkness. But, to look at the work closely is to see his colors allowing the Resurrection to shine through it all.
His is not a bad plan for a life, that sustained gazing on the Incarnation. And Christmas is not a bad time to begin.
And that is exactly what we do with the sudden Incarnation, if you will, of a new bishop in our midst. Isaiah spoke throughout Advent of freshness, and newness, and re-creation. Bishop-elect Brungardt will be about those things in the years to come.
Join with me this Christmas season in thanking God for him. Join with me in helping him get accustomed to our Diocese. And join with me always in praying daily for him and his work. His work, the work of Redemption, will be ever after linked with our own.

‘Su trabajo ... será siempre desde
ahora ligado al nuestro’
He visto solamente copias, nunca una pintura real de Rouault. Pero desde que era muchacho en la escuela secundaria, me fascinaba la obra de este hombre talentoso que murió en 1958.
Si el sujeto era el payaso o la prostituta o los trabajadores de Paris o el Cristo doliente, su arte era una larga meditación sobre la Encarnación. Su Cristo era el siervo doliente que llevó la carga de los pobres y los marginados de Francia en el último siglo. Esta es la razón por su oscuridad. Pero, ver cerca la obra es ver los colores, permitiendo que la Resurrección brille por medio de todo.
Lo de él no es un mal plan para una vida, esa mirada sostenida en la Encarnación. Y la Navidad no es un mal tiempo para empezar.
Y eso es exactamente lo que hacemos con una encarnación repentina, si lo ven así, de un nuevo Obispo entre nosotros. Isaías habló durante todo adviento de una frescura y lo nuevo y creación nueva. El Obispo-Electo Brungardt se entregará a esas cosas en los años venideros.
Acompáñenme en este tiempo navideño en dar gracias a Dios por él. Acompáñenme en ayudarle a acostumbrarse a nuestra Diócesis. Acompáñame siempre en orar diariamente por él y por su trabajo. Su trabajo, el trabajo de la Redención, será siempre desde ahora ligado al nuestro.
