‘Another Way’
The new title for this column is drawn from the story of the Magi in St. Matthew’s Gospel: God told them in a dream to return home by another way.
Through the agency of the Church and the decision of the Holy Father, I have now been told to go by another way. It may entail some starts and some stops. It will certainly use some back roads. It will result in getting lost here and there. But the winding road will always be there, going somewhere, always be moving on to an end, the home from which we came, the home from which we will go. I shall share with you the sights, and the sounds, and the feelings, and the thoughts of this, my last road trip, by placing them within the light of our Catholic Faith.
Why on earth should that be of any interest to you? Basically, because you are called to do the exact same thing. The world is always telling you to go this way. Your friends are always telling you to go that way. Your desires are always telling you to go yet another way altogether. But your Faith ... it tells you that you are a new creation, and that the Lord is thus urging you to return home by another way.
Your circumstances changed when you were baptized, and mine changed again when I retired. Perhaps we can now be of some slight help to one another. There will be turns in the road that are unexpected. There will be low places where the fog can gather and can settle. There will be construction zones. There will be speed traps in small towns. And there will be deer in November.
We can compare notes, that’s what we can do. We can put our heads together. Some, slight, help.

Otro Camino
El nuevo título para esta columna se ha extraído de la historia del Rey Mago en el Evangelio de San Mateo: Dios les dijo en un sueño que regresarán a casa por otro camino.
Por medio de la agencia de la Iglesia y la decisión del Santo Padre, se me ha dicho ahora ir por otro camino. Este puede implicar algunos comienzos y algunas paradas. Esto usará ciertamente algunos caminos vecinos. Esto causará perderse aquí y allí. Pero el camino tortuoso siempre estará allí, yendo en algún sitio, siempre moviéndose hacia un final, la casa de la cual vinimos, la casa de la cual iremos. Compartiré con ustedes las vistas, los sonidos, los sentimientos, y los pensamientos de este, mi último viaje del camino, colocándolos dentro de la luz de nuestra Fe Católica.
¿Porqué en la tierra esto sería de algún interés para usted? Básicamente, porque ustedes han sido llamados para hacer la misma cosa. El mundo siempre les está diciendo ir en este camino. Sus amigos siempre les están diciendo ir por ese camino. Sus deseos siempre les están diciendo ir por otro camino camino juntos. Pero su Fe ... le dice a usted que usted es una nueva creación, y que el Señor está por lo tanto invitando a que regrese a casa por otro camino.
Sus circunstancias cambiaron cuando ustedes fueron bautizados, y la mía cambió de nuevo cuando me jubilé. Tal vez podemos ahora ser de alguna ayuda unos a otros. Habrán tiempos inesperados en el camino. Habrán lugares bajos donde la niebla se una y se quede. Habrán zonas de construcción. Habrán tranques de velocidad en pequeñas ciudades. Y estará el venado en noviembre.
Podemos comparar notas, eso es lo que podemos hacer. Podemos unir nuestras mentes. Algunas, leves, ayuda.
