'We are now being remade'

Go forth, to a land I will show you, the Lord said to Abraham (II Sunday, Lent). It became the heart of his vocation. It was another way for him.
He was asked to go forth from his own land, his familiar place, his familiar ways. He was asked to go forth from his own Father’s house, the place where he most belonged, the place where he was most at home. He was asked to go forth to a land I will show you, to a place of adventure, to a place of mystery, to a place of faith.
Thus did the Promised Land fix itself in his imagination and his memory: it became his guiding star. Thus did it inspire his children in all the time after him, from the Exodus to the Zionist Movement of the last century. It became the Dream of the Hebrew people, that land, flowing with milk and honey. It was the source of all their Hope. It was the thing that kept them going through all the tragedies and all the sufferings of their journey across the centuries.
But if you stop and think about all the dreams, and all the hopes, and all the energies, and all the sufferings that are contained in that sentence, you will see that the land itself must be more than a mere piece of ground. A spot of earth could not sustain all those lofty aspirations. The land is not so much a place at all. It is a condition. It is a state. It is a way of living rather than a where of living.
The land I will show you, the land Jesus did show the three Apostles on the Mount of Transfiguration, the land he did show the Twelve, and all the rest of us, on the Day of the Resurrection, that land is his Risen-Life.
This is our vocation: a relationship with the Risen-Lord. We are called to live with his very own Risen-Life. This is a lasting place of our own, where we can settle, and stretch out, and expand, and grow in every way. We are even now being remade, slowly, into his Risen-Life. All our human powers (soul, mind, will, senses, imagination, memory, emotions) all of them are becoming ever more perfect expressions of his Spirit living within us.
Anda a la tierra que yo te mostraré, el Señor le dijo a Abrahán (II domingo, cuaresma). Esto se convirtió en el corazón de su vocación. Fue otro modo para él.
Se le pidió que se fuera de su propia tierra, de su lugar familiar, de sus modos conocidos. Se le pidió que dejara la casa propia de su padre, el lugar donde más pertenecía, el lugar donde más se sentía en casa. Se le pidió que se fuera a la tierra que yo te mostraré, a un lugar de aventura, a un lugar de misterio, a un lugar de fe.
Así fue como la Tierra Prometida misma se le gravó en su imaginación y en su memoria: se convirtió en su estrella que lo guiaba. Así fue como inspiraba a sus hijos e hijas todo el tiempo después de él, desde el Éxodo hasta el Movimiento Sionista del último siglo. Se convirtió en el Sueño del pueblo hebreo, esa tierra, que mana leche y miel. Fue la fuente de toda su Esperanza. Fue la cosa que los animó en todas sus tragedias y todos sus sufrimientos en su jornada através de los siglos.
Pero si se detienen para pensar acerca de todos los sueños, y todas las esperanzas, y todas las energías, y todos los sufrimientos contenidos en esa declaración, verán que la tierra misma tiene que ser más que un mero pedazo de terreno. Ningún lugar de la tierra pudiera sostener todas esa aspiraciones nobles. La tierra no es tanto un lugar de todo modo. Es una condición. Es un estado. Es un modo de vivir en vez de un dónde vivir.
Esta tierra que yo te mostraré, la tierra que Jesús les mostró a los tres Apóstoles en el Monte de la Transfiguración, la tierra que les mostró a los Doce, y al resto de todos nosotros, en el Día de la Resurrección, esa tierra es su Vida resucitada.
Esta es nuestra vocación: una relación con el Señor Resucitado. Somos llamados a vivir con su misma Vida resucitada. Este es un lugar permanente nuestro, donde nos podemos establecer, y extendernos, y desarrollarnos, y crecer de todos modos. Ahora mismo nos estamos haciendo de nuevo, lentamente, en su Vida resucitada. Todos nuestros poderes humanos (alma, mente, voluntad, sentidos, imaginación, memoria, emociones) todos estos se están convirtiendo en expresiones aun más perfectas de su Espíritu viviendo en nosotros.
