That's what this Lent can mean...
Lent, again.
How many have there been in your 20, 40, 70 years of living? Why should this one be any different? Why should it lead to real change in your life? “Because salvation is nearer,” St. Paul said, “than when you first believed.”
“Salvation” is Jesus Christ. It is communion with him in this life, so that there might be communion with him in life eternal. But, though we are made for that communion, we don’t always act like it. We close our eyes to it. We allow things to drown it out. We fight against it. We run from it. That’s why Lent, again, is so important for us. “It is time,” St. Paul again, “to wake from sleep.”
It is a time, as St. Vincent de Paul put it in an intriguing phrase, to take your step from God. He meant that we should keep our eyes on God, and try to see what he is showing us. We should seek his inspiration and any indication of his Will for us. We should develop an “attitude of watching him.”
All the time waiting for his clarity, all the time trying to see his signs, all the time adjusting ourselves to them: that’s what taking your step from God means. That’s what this Lent … can mean … if you open yourself to it, and to Him.

La Cuaresma, otra vez.
¿Cuantas ha habido en sus 20, 40, o 70 años de vida? ¿Porque debería de ser esta diferente a las demás? ¿Porque debería de llevarlos a un verdadero cambio en sus vidas? “Nuestra salvación está ahora más cerca,” dijo San Pablo, “que cuando llegamos a la fe.”
“La salvación” es Jesucristo. Es la comunión con él en esta vida, para que pueda haber comunión con él en la vida eterna. Pero, aunque estamos hechos para esta comunión, no siempre actuamos como si fuera así. Cerramos nuestros ojos a ella. Dejamos que las cosas la ahoguen. Luchamos contra ella. Corremos de ella. Por eso es que la Cuaresma, otra vez, es muy importante para nosotros. “Ya es hora,” San Pablo otra vez, “de despertar.”
Es un tiempo, como lo puso en una intrigante frase San Vicente de Paúl, de tomar su paso de Dios. Él quería decir que deberíamos de fijar nuestros ojos en Dios, y tratar de ver lo que él nos esta mostrando. Debemos de buscar su inspiración y cualquier indicación de su Voluntad para nosotros. Debemos de desarrollar una “actitud de mirarlo a él.”
Todo el tiempo esperando su claridad, todo el tiempo tratando de ver sus señales, todo el tiempo adaptándonos a ella: esto es lo que tomar su paso de Dios significa. Esto es lo que esta Cuaresma…puede significar…si se abren a ella, y a El.
