'A Listening Heart'
You may have noticed some electioneering of late, and some conventioneering too. You may have noticed that we are in the final sprint to the election itself. This led me to thinking about the candidates we shall soon elect, and about the Year of Faith we shall soon enter.
In Germany a year ago, Pope Benedict told the story of God’s invitation to young King Solomon just before he took the throne. At this important moment, he said, “make of me a request.” The fledgling King did not ask for success, or wealth, or long life, or destruction of his enemies. Solomon asked for “a listening heart, so that I may govern God’s people, and discern between good and evil.” (I Kings 3: 9) Here the Bible tells us what should ultimately matter for any candidate, for any politician. “How do we recognize what is right? How can we discern between good and evil, between what is truly right and what only appears so?”
For most of the things that need to be regulated by law, the support of a majority can serve as a sufficient criterion. But where the moral principles beneath the democratic process are themselves nothing more solid than a shifting social consensus, the fragility of the whole thing becomes all too evident. That may be why our government-players move so slowly in our present government quagmire.
This is where the Gift of Faith can make a crucial contribution. No matter what the problem at hand (economic, political, military, social), if we ever hope to solve it, we have to know where we come from, where we are going, and how we are going to get there.
Faith answers these fundamental questions. When it talks about God, Creation, the Fall, the Incarnation, Redemption, it is talking a great deal about where we came from, about how we are to live in this world of ours, and about where our final destiny is to be found. There is Vision here, about the dignity of the human person, and his inalienable God-given rights. There is Vision here, about the capacity to discern between good and evil, and thus to establish true law, and thus to serve true justice and true peace.
We no longer know that Faith in its overflowing richness. We no longer share that wide Vision. Is it any wonder that we find it hard to choose between candidates? Is it any wonder that we need a year devoted to reflection on our Catholic Faith? A Listening Heart, that’s what our Faith tells us to be. That’s what we are we are looking for.
'Corazón que Escucha'
Tal vez has notado algunos electoreros últimamente ó también la participación en las convenciones políticas. Tal vez has notado que ya estamos en la carrera final de esta elección. Esto me hizo pensar sobre los candidatos que elegiremos pronto y sobre el Año de la Fe al que entraremos muy pronto.
Hace un año Alemania, el Santo Padre Benedicto conto la historia de la invitación de Dios al joven Rey Salomón antes que él tomó el trono. En este momento importante, él dijo, “Pídeme lo que quieras y te lo daré.” El Rey nuevo no pidió el éxito o la riqueza o la vial ara o la muerte de sus enemigos. Salomón pidió “un corazón que escucha, que sepa juzgar a tu pueblo y pueda distinguir entre el bien y el mal.” (1 Reyes 3:9) Aqui nos dice la biblia lo que verdaderamente importa para cualquier candidato y para cualquier político. “¿Cómo podemos reconocer lo qué es correcto? ¿Cómo podemos distinguir entre el bien y el mal, entre qué es realmente correcto y lo qué sólo aparece así?”
Para la mayor parte de las cosas que tienen que ser reguladas según la ley, el apoyo de una mayoría puede servir de un criterio suficiente. Pero donde están los principios morales bajo el proceso democrático no son nada mas solido que en un consenso social que esta cambiando—la fragilidad de todo se hace demasiado evidente. Puedo ser por esto que nuestros jugadores gubernamentales se mueven tan despacio en nuestro cenagal del gobierno presente.
Esto es donde el Regalo de la Fe puede hacer una contribución crucial. No importa cual sea el problema que ocupan (económico, político, militar, social) —si esperamos solucionarlo, tenemos que saber de donde venimos, a donde vamos y como vamos llegar allí.
La fe contesta estas preguntas fundamentales. Cuando hablan sobre Dios, la Creación, la Caída, la Encarnación, la Redención—están hablando mucho de sobre donde vinimos, de como debemos vivir en este mundo nuestro y sobre donde nuestro destino final debe ser encontrado. Hay una Visión aquí, sobre la dignidad de la persona humana y sus derechos propios dados por Dios. Hay una Visión aquí, sobre la capacidad de distinguir entre el bien y el mal—y así establecer la ley verdadera y así servir la justicia verdadera y la paz verdadera.
Ya no sabemos que Fe en su riqueza se desborda. Ya no compartimos aquella amplia Visión. ¿Sera sorpresa que encontramos con dificultad eligiendo entre candidatos? ¿Sera sorpresa que necesitamos un año dedicado a la reflexión sobre nuestra Fe Católica? Un Corazón que Escucha, eso es lo que nuestra Fe nos dice ser. Esto es lo que estamos buscando.
