Teach us how to pray.
As a young priest there was no sentence I dreaded more. It was instant unease. It was a mouth-without-words. It was looking-for-an-exit. In time, I came to find plausible (and safe) ways of responding to the request. But the deep down dread never left me. “You.” “You teach us how to pray.”
I had a sense of how poor I was at it, you see. I had a sinking feeling that I knew very little of this great subject. I wasn’t at all skilled in it. I did not know how to pray, and mostly, I did not pray. To put it more accurately: I prayed in my own way, not in God’s own way.
What I did not really know was that prayer is a “supernatural act,” and is therefore beyond my strength, and can be done therefore only through inspiration and the help of God’s grace. A supernatural act must have a supernatural cause. I knew this theoretically, but I had forgotten it practically. I had to ask the Lord for his Spirit of Prayer, and then to allow that Spirit to work within me.
What I did not really know was that it is the “heart” that prays. It is to the heart’s voice that God listens. It is to the heart’s ears that God answers. When our Tradition speaks of the “heart,” it always means the most human thing, the deepest thing, the most spiritual part in us. Only through the heart that has learned to pray does the Lord enlighten the mind. I knew this theoretically, but I had forgotten in practically.
Real prayer is simplicity itself. Without the intervention of the imagination, or reasoning, or anything else, prayer is a very simple attention of the mind, and an equally simple application of the will. But they have to be focused on Him, the mind and the will do, and not on themselves.
It should be clear, then, what a Year of Faith has to be about. The Year, the whole business of Christian living, Salvation itself: these depend on prayer. If we do not receive the grace we need to make this a year of renewal, it is because we have grown slack in our practice of prayer. The decline in the Christian Life always begins at that very point. The renewal of the Christian Life always begins there too.

Como un sacerdote joven no había otra frase que temaba más. Era una inquietud instante. Era una boca-sin-palabras. Era buscar-una-salida. En tiempo, llegué a encontrar formas plausibles (y seguras) de responder a la solicitud. Pero el temor profundo nunca me dejo. “Tu.” “Tu nos ensenaras a como rezar.”
Tuve el sentido de que no era bueno, vez. Tuve la sensación de aprensión que yo sabia muy poco de este gran tema. Mi habilidad no era de experto. No sabia como orar, y sobre todo, no rece. Para ser mas preciso: rece de mi propio modo, no del propio modo de Dios.
Lo que realmente no sabía es que la oración es un “acto sobrenatural,” y es por lo tanto más allá de mi fortaleza, y se puede hacer solamente por la inspiración y la ayuda de la gracia de Dios. Un acto sobrenatural tiene que tener una causa sobrenatural. Sabia que en esto teóricamente, pero se me había olvidado prácticamente. Le tuve que preguntar al Señor por su Espíritu de la Oración y luego permitir al Espíritu que trabajara por dentro de mí.
Lo que realmente no sabía es que es el “corazón” que ora. Es a la voz del corazón a la que Dios escucha. Es a los oídos del corazón a lo que Dios contesta. Cuando nuestra Tradición habla sobre el “corazón,” siempre significa lo más humano, lo más profundo, la parte más espiritual en nosotros. Solo por el corazón que ha aprendido a orar el Señor ilumina a la mente. Sabia que en esto teóricamente, pero se me había olvidado prácticamente.
La oración verdadera es la simplicidad en si misma. Sin la intervención de la imaginación, o razonamiento o cualquier otra cosa, la oración es una atención muy simple de la mente y una aplicación igual de sencilla de la voluntad. Pero tienen que ser concentradas en El, tiene que ser la mente y la voluntad, y no en si mismos.
Debe quedar claro, entonces de lo que el Año de la Fe tiene que ser. El Año, todo el negocio de la vida Cristiana, salvación propia: dependen de la oración. Si no recibimos la gracia que necesitamos que hacer de este año de renovación, es porque hemos crecido flojos en nuestra practica de la oración. La disminución de la vida Cristiana siempre comienza en ese momento preciso. La renovación de la vida Cristiana siempre comienza allí también.
