Revealed Religion
The real religion of vast numbers of American young people is a kind of fuzzy moral niceness, with an easy, undemanding God, on duty to make people feel happy whenever they need him. To put it in the words of a young woman from Maryland, (Faith is) just whatever makes you feel good about you.
An American Bishop said that in November of last year. I know him to be a perceptive and prayerful man who “takes his step from God,” but I hope he is wrong in this.
Such a religion would leave out all the important stuff. Its view of the human person is shallow, and its view of the divine persons in God is shallower still. It misses all the crucial things.
Take the human person. Is not where you come from, and where you are going important to you? Revealed Religion tells you that: this religion does not. Is not the bone-deep freedom of your own life important to you? Revealed Religion shows you how this proceeds from the heart of God: this religion does not. Is not the sin that constricts and battles that freedom every inch of your earthly way important to you? Revealed Religion helps you understand the blight that hangs over humanity, and how to cope with it: this religion does not.
Not to know this is to miss the wonder you were made to be, the incredible power of your intelligence, the dogged strength of your will, the fertility of your imagination. Revealed Religion marvels at all this: this religion casually throws it all away.
Revealed Religion says that God invites us to communion, with one another and with himself. But he never forces us to accept that invitation. His freedom appeals to our freedom, but he will take our “No” as a final answer. That separation from communion is what our theology calls “Hell.” It is a separation that only we can make.
Is “that possibility” not important to you?

La verdadera religión del número enorme de jóvenes americanos es como una amabilidad de moral difusa, con un Dios sencillo y modesto, el deber de hacer que la gente este contenta cada vez que lo necesitan. Tal religión excluiría toda lo importante. Su opinión sobre la persona humana superficial y su opinión de las personas divinas de Dios es aún mas. Pierde todas las cosas cruciales.
Toma a la persona humana. ¿No es de dónde vienes y dónde vas importante para ti? La Religión Revelada te dice que: esta religión no. ¿No es la libertad más profunda lo más importante de tu vida? La Religión Revelada muestra como esto proviene del corazón de Dios: esta religión no lo hace. ¿No es el pecado que constriñe y lucha con esa libertad a cada pulgada del camino importante para ti? La Religión Revelada ayuda a entender la plaga que cuelga sobre la humanidad y cómo afrontarlo: esta religión no.
No conocer esto pierdes de la maravilla en lo que fuiste hecho, el poder increíble de tu inteligencia, la fuerza tenaz de tu voluntad, la fertilidad de tu imaginación. Es una maravilla para la Religión Revelada en todo esto: esta religión por casualidad tira todo esto.
La Religión Revelada dice que Dios nos invita a la comunión, el uno con el otro y con el mismo. Pero nunca nos obliga a aceptar esa invitación. Su libertad apela a nuestra libertad, pero tomara nuestro “No” como una respuesta final. Esa separación de la comunión es lo que nuestra teología llama “Infierno.” Es una separación que solo nosotros podemos hacer.
