Faith In and a Faith That
One way to think about Faith is to linger over the difference between a Faith In and a Faith That. The first is about a Person, the second is about a Truth.
Faith in is “the” fundamental religious experience. It is the response of Abraham, our Father in Faith, who felt like dust and ashes when the Lord intervened in his life. He met a Person unlike himself. He met the complete Otherness of God. He was changed forever.
Faith in is more than a mere rational conviction. It is a life-changing surrender to a person. It occurs “only” in relation to a person. And, even more, it occurs “only” in relation to an Absolute Person: either to God (as was the case with Abraham and Moses), or to the self-revealing God in Jesus Christ (as was the case with the Apostles).
Faith in is more than a mere theoretical response. It is an all-embracing act in which we completely surrender mind, will, and heart to the Absolute Person. It is to yield to the appeal of Jesus. It is to fall into the hands of the Living God.
Faith in is not a sense of having been overwhelmed by something stronger, not a sense of having been swamped and carried away by some irresistible force.
Faith in is a sense of having responded in love, of having felt the appeal of the mysterious Other, and of having rushed toward Him freely. We respond with the deepest, fullest, human freedom. We gather up the best that is within us, and we give it away. We make a gift of self to Another. “That” is Faith in.
And “that” should be our experience when we pray. Every prayer to God makes that Faith in real. It gives it actual existence. It “is” that surrender.
Fe En y una Fe Que
Una forma de pensar sobre la Fe, es contemplar la diferencia entre una Fe En y una Fe Que. La primera es sobre una Persona, la segunda es sobre una Verdad.
Fe en es “la” experiencia fundamental religiosa. Es la respuesta de Abram, nuestro Padre en la Fe, quien se sintió como polvo y ceniza cuando el Señor intervino en su vida. El conoció a una Persona diferente a sí mismo. El conoció la Otra parte completa de Dios. El cambió para siempre.
La Fe en es más que una mera convicción racional. Es una renuncia al cambio de vida para una persona. Esto ocurre “solamente” en relación a una persona. Y, aún más, esto ocurre “solamente” en relación a una Persona Absoluta: ya sea a Dios (como fue el caso de Abram y Moisés), o a la propia revelación de Dios en Jesucristo (como fue el caso de los Apóstoles).
La Fe en es más que una mera respuesta teórica. Ella está en todo acto en que nosotros renunciamos completamente la mente, la voluntad y el corazón hacia la Persona Absoluta. Es ceder ante el encanto de Jesús. Es caer en las manos del Dios Viviente.
La Fe en no es un sentido de estar sobrecargado por algo más fuerte no es un sentido de estar hundido y alejado por alguna fuerza irresistible.
La Fe en es un sentido de haber respondido en amor, de haber sentido el encanto del “ Otro” misterioso, y de haberse apresurado hacia Él libremente. Respondemos con la más profunda, más plena, libertad humana. Reunimos lo mejor que está dentro de nosotros, y lo regalamos. Damos un regalo del propio yo para Otros. “Esa” es la Fe en.
Y “esa” debería ser nuestra experiencia cuando oramos. Toda oración a Dios convierte esa fe en lo real. Ella le da la verdadera existencia. Es “decir” aquella redención.
