The first sign of the Risen Lord
Those closest to Jesus did not handle his death very well. He was gone. They were sad. They were scared. They were confused. They were unnerved.
His disappearance left them thus, but that very vanishing (evidenced by the empty tomb) was also the first faint sign of his Resurrection.
It was not a large and compelling sign, to be sure: not like that dinner in Emmaus, not like that evening of the Resurrection day in the Upper Room, not like the appearance to the doubting Thomas. But it was a good, down-to-earth, usable sign, nonetheless.
And it is now a good sign for us, because we don’t handle his disappearance any better than they did. When our own prayer grows cold, and nothing seems to happen, and we grow sad, restless, and confused, Jesus does, in fact, seem to disappear. He seems to have gone into hiding.
That’s the time to remember that the Disappearance was the first sign of his Resurrection. It was the first evidence that he now comes to us in a different way, a new way. It was their first glimpse, and ours too, of the now Risen-Lord.
So, be like the Apostles, and like St. Mary Magdalen, the Apostle of the Apostles. They did not wallow in discouragement, and give up the fight. They stayed with the fight.
Use the disappearance (it won’t last) as the Lord wants you to use it: to lessen our attachments to the world and to our own stubborn judgment; to hollow us out; to make room for the Real God (not the one we imagine); to set us free, for Him.
Now we see him, now we don’t? Not really. Now we see him by Faith, and not by Sight.

Los más cercanos a Jesús no tomaron su muerte muy bien. El ya no estaba. Estaban tristes. Tenían miedo. Estaban confundidos. Estaban desconcertados.
Su desaparición los dejo así, pero esa precisa desaparición (la tumba vacía estaba de evidencia) también era la primera señal de su Resurrección.
Para ser más precisos, no era una señal grande y convincente: no como la cena en Emaús, no como esa noche del día de la Resurrección en el Cuarto de Arriba, no como la aparición ante Tomas. Aun así, era una señal buena que se podía usar.
Y nosotros no hemos tomado su desaparición mejor que ellos, así que ahora es una buena señal para nosotros. Cuando nuestra propia oración se pone fría, cuando parece que nada sucede, y nos ponemos tristes, inquietos, y confundidos, Jesús, en realidad, si parece que no está. Parece que se ha escondido.
Ese es el tiempo de recordar que su Desaparición fue la primera señal de su Resurrección. Fue la primera evidencia de que ahora viene hacia nosotros de una forma diferente. Fue la primera visión de ellos, y también la de nosotros, del ahora Señor-Resucitado.
Así que sean como los Apóstoles, y como Santa Maria Magdalena, el Apóstol de los Apóstoles. Ellos no se hundieron en el desánimo, ni se rindieron ante la lucha. Continuaron con la lucha.
Usen su desaparición (no durara) como el Señor quiere que la usen: para debilitar nuestras ataduras hacia el mundo y hacia nuestro propio juicio terco; para vaciarnos; para hacer campo para el Verdadero Dios (no el que nos imaginamos); para liberarnos, para El.
¿Ahora lo vemos, y ahora no? No es así. Ahora lo vemos por la Fe, y no por la Mirada.
