‘Wait for the pearls...’
Ordinarily, we spend too much time with the string, and too little time with the pearls. That’s why thick commentaries on the Gospels so often leave us cold: too much string.
Take St. John’s “I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14: 1-6) Many take that to mean that Jesus has gone somewhere, to work on something, something altogether outside of us: to remodel a room, perhaps, to rearrange walls, to change the furniture. They do that almost without thinking. But that cannot be right. Instead of looking outside, we should be looking inside.
He must “go,” so that our very missing-of-him will build steadily. He must “go,” so that our mind and heart will be stretched wide and wider for him. He must “go,” so that our Faith will slough off its skin, be purified, be deepened for him.
He must “go,” so that this absence will turn into the presence of the real God, the God as he is, beyond all our sensing, thinking, and imagining, the God in himself, the God who is Love, the God who made us for communion with him, and with those around us.
It ends … all this building, this stretching, this purifying, and this deepening … it ends only when he has made us as ready as we can ever be. “We” are the place he is preparing, don’t you see? “We” are the stuff he is removing, the disordered desires that are keeping us from him. “We” are his hidden work within us, this slow pearl-making that is the story of our lives.
Pearls, friends … wait for the pearls.
‘...Esperen las perlas’
Por lo regular, pasamos mucho tiempo enfocándonos en la cadena, y no el tiempo suficiente en las perlas. Por eso, comentarios muy densos sobre los Evangelios a veces nos dejan fríos: demasiada cadena.
Por ejemplo, el Evangelio de San Juan dice “voy a prepararles un lugar.” (Juan 14:2) Muchos toman esto como que él se ha ido a algún lugar, para trabajar en algo, algo completamente fuera de nosotros: para renovar una habitación, tal vez, para mover paredes, para cambiar los muebles. Hacen esto casi sin pensar. Pero eso no puede estar correcto. En lugar de mirar hacia afuera, debemos mirar hacia adentro.
Se debe “ir,” para que nosotros lo vayamos extrañando cada día más. Se debe “ir,” para que nuestra mente y corazón se puedan estirar más y más para él. Se debe “ir,” para que nuestra Fe pueda desechar su piel, se pueda purificar, se pueda profundizar.
Se debe “ir,” para que esta ausencia se pueda convertir en la presencia del verdadero Dios, el Dios como es, mas allá de nuestro entendimiento, pensamiento, e imaginación, el Dios en sí mismo, el Dios que es amor, el Dios que nos creó para la comunión con él y con las personas a nuestro alrededor.
Todo esto termina… esta construcción, este estirón, esta purificación, y este profundizar… termina solamente cuando ya nos ha preparado lo mas que ha podido. “¿Nosotros” somos el lugar que está preparando, no lo pueden ver? “Nosotros” somos las cosas que está renovando, los deseos desorientados que nos apartan de él. “Nosotros” somos su trabajo oculto dentro de nosotros, esta creación lenta de una cadena de perlas que es la historia de nuestras vidas.
Las perlas, amigos/as… esperen las perlas.
