FIRE UPON EARTH, that very thing: this is what Lent is meant to be.
So … just what are YOU giving up for Lent? Before you answer, remember that all the Saints of our Church have always thought that, in this matter, we should go big, rather than go small.
I have run over this Lenten course a few times by now, and I have seen what happens to many of the runners. You may have had a brief flash of grace leading up to Ash Wednesday … something you remembered, something someone said, some vague hint that ‘Maybe this is the time.’ But the ashes had not yet fallen from your head before that filmy resolve fell from your heart.
This is no reason to slink away downhearted, beaten before you start, though. There is another secret our Saints know, and it can save any Lent badly begun.
Lent is not just about you, you see: it is also about God. He has a part to play in this sacred season too. And he plays it by putting the very best forms of penance right before our eyes.
All our spiritual writers seem to agree (one of the more ‘major’ of the ‘minor’ miracles, this) all seem to agree on this one thing: that all of the best penances are the passive penances. And what, pray tell, are those? They are the ones that God has chosen for us.
We do not have to consult wise women or men in order to track them down. We do not have to wrack our brains in order to find them; All we have to do is to look around us, all we have to do is … to open our eyes.
Reach out, and take them: that’s all. Even you can do that. Even I can do that. They are passive these penances, because he gives them to us: the initiative is all his. They are penances, these things he gives us because they have some hurt in them: they are crosses. All we have to do is to accept them. All we have to do to lift them and carry them, more or less without complaining.
They are tailored specifically for us: they do not really fit anyone else. He has designed them just for you, and just for me, and just for him over there in the corner, and just for her, who is running a little late, but will be here shortly. That’s the way he works: he has an advanced degree in this sort of designing, and he has had an infinity of experience in working at his trade.
So trust him in this. Your best penance in Lent is accepting whatever hard thing he is giving you in these forty days. Think about it. Uncover its hidden meaning. Respond to his love with your own love. You will be redeeming the world with Him, in your own small way, and it will be crucial for someone who is hurting around you.

Están hechos a medida específicamente para nosotros: en realidad no se ajustan a nadie más.
