Words of an excellent theologian … delicate and difficult. He was talking about the coming of divine grace into any and every human heart. It is ‘difficult’ to find words for it, because that coming is so ‘delicate’ a thing in itself.
Unless we know this in advance, and accept slow growth here, we will never get very far in our understanding of this mystery called ‘grace.’
There is a hurdle for most of us to get over right at the start, and it is a high one. How do we go about acquiring Divine Grace? The simple truth at the heart of the Catholic theology of Grace is this: through our own power and merit, we cannot acquire it at all.
You cannot talk about ‘grace’ by talking about ‘works,’ if I might borrow words from Saint Paul (Romans 11: 6). If you try to do so, grace ceases to be grace. In the Catholic world, ‘grace’ is first of all about freedom: it is a love or a gift freely given, owed to no one. There is just no way we can acquire grace for ourselves through our own efforts.
There was no way we could have called ourselves out of nothingness into the natural being or existence all humans share. We needed something else for that, from outside us. Why should we harbor the thought, then, that we could call ourselves out of nothingness into the supernatural being or existence all baptized Christians share? We also need something else for that, from outside us.
The same God who has given us a natural life must create us anew if we are to have a supernatural life: if we are to share in his life. ‘Must?’ He did not have to do the first, and he does not have to do the second either. Whatever we do have is an entirely free gift from Him. It bubbles up and over, out of his infinite goodness.
What is left for us to do, then, if we are interested in entering the world of grace? More than you might think. Though we cannot win grace for ourselves, or manufacture grace by ourselves, we may … if we allow grace to entice us … prepare ourselves for it, and thus help make us more capable of receiving it. It works this way because grace is like every real love: it is never forced, it is always about freedom, His and ours.
Only the incarnate Son of God, who possesses grace to the full can win grace for us. This he has already done in his passion, death, and resurrection. So, grace in your life, and in mine, is going to depend on some relationship with him. And just how is that working out?
As delicate and as difficult, I’d bet.

Palabras de un excelente teólogo… delicadas y difíciles. Estaba hablando de la venida de la gracia divina a todos y cada uno de los corazones humanos. Es “difícil” encontrar palabras para describirlo, porque esa venida es algo muy “delicado” en sí mismo.
A menos que sepamos esto de antemano y aceptemos un crecimiento lento aquí, nunca llegaremos muy lejos en nuestra comprensión de este misterio llamado “gracia”.
La mayoría de nosotros tenemos un obstáculo que debemos superar desde el principio, y es muy alto. ¿Cómo hacemos para adquirir la Gracia Divina? La simple verdad en el corazón de la teología católica de la Gracia es esta: a través de nuestro propio poder y mérito, no podemos adquirirla en absoluto.
No se puede hablar de “gracia” hablando de “obras”, si se me permite tomar prestadas palabras de San Pablo (Romanos 11:6). Si intentas hacerlo, la gracia deja de ser gracia. En el mundo católico, la “gracia” tiene que ver ante todo con la libertad: es un amor o un don gratuito que no se debe a nadie. Simplemente no hay manera de que podamos adquirir gracia para nosotros mismos mediante nuestros propios esfuerzos.
No había manera de que pudiéramos habernos llamado a nosotros mismos desde la nada al ser natural o la existencia que todos los humanos comparten. Necesitábamos algo más para eso, desde fuera de nosotros. ¿Por qué deberíamos albergar la idea, entonces, de que podríamos llamarnos a nosotros mismos desde la nada al ser o existencia sobrenatural que todos los cristianos bautizados comparten? Para eso también necesitamos algo más, desde fuera de nosotros.
El mismo Dios que nos ha dado una vida natural debe crearnos de nuevo si queremos tener una vida sobrenatural: si queremos compartir su vida. ‘¿Debe?’ No tenía que hacer lo primero, y tampoco tiene que hacer lo segundo. Todo lo que tenemos es un regalo totalmente gratuito de Él. Burbujea una y otra vez, debido a su infinita bondad.
¿Qué nos queda entonces por hacer si estamos interesados en entrar en el mundo de la gracia? Más de lo que piensas. Aunque no podemos ganar la gracia para nosotros mismos, ni fabricarla por nosotros mismos, podemos... si permitimos que la gracia nos seduzca... prepararnos para ella, y así ayudarnos a ser más capaces de recibirla. Funciona de esta manera porque la gracia es como todo amor verdadero: nunca es forzada, siempre se trata de libertad, la suya y la nuestra.
Sólo el Hijo de Dios encarnado, que posee la gracia en plenitud, puede ganarla para nosotros. Esto ya lo hizo en su pasión, muerte y resurrección. Entonces, la gracia en tu vida, y en la mía, va a depender de alguna relación con él. ¿Y cómo está funcionando eso?
Supongo que será igual de delicado y difícil.
