"To light and to guard, to rule and to guide:” so the thousand-year-old prayer had it, the prayer to those angels we call our Guardians.
They are not made for us, these angels, so much as we are made for them. Their protective and guarding action has but one single aim: to make us worthy of them, worthy to live one day in their company. They protect us by doing three things for us.
First, they have, and they use, an intimate and complete knowledge of each of us. Their knowledge goes beyond what an angel normally knows of created things: it reaches even into the secrets of our human hearts.
Second, they make up for what is lacking in our own decisions: they have a fixed-will to help us, always when it is necessary, and often when it is merely useful for us.
Third, there is a what and a how to their subtle actions on our behalf that it would be good for us to know. They need only think us, and they are here with us, acting powerfully for us, these mysterious creatures from the spirit-world. And, our theologians have always told us, they act especially where we tend to fail.
There is some angelic action that is outside us: it keeps us safe from any threatening dangers that only a higher intelligence could possibly see; or it shapes conditions that will make for our ultimate happiness, the circumstances that would call for a genius more than human to arrange.
There is some angelic action too that is inside us: the angel finds there, in our minds and in our hearts, room enough for activity which he alone can produce: to see new things we never dreamed before; to choose wisely in particular matters where decision is required, to apply the practical rules, as it were; and to see and choose when no hard and fast rules are available, and our lower appetites are threatening to swamp us, and to carry us away from the good He wants for us, and to drown us.
Such is this gift of God to man and to woman, this extraordinary gift: such is the Guardian Angel. But will we always appreciate this ‘outside help’ once we learn of it?
Not normally, I’m afraid. We will often be unable to detect this fresh idea, this wisp of wise advice, this faint impulse to go to the left rather than to the right … often these things will catch us off guard, and escape us.
Were it otherwise, it would be a serious loss to our mature moral life. If we had within us, clearly and distinctly, the thought and decision of someone outside us, it would make it impossible to live a serious moral life, to take responsibility for what we think and for what we do. It would reduce us to mere automatons, waiting for the next rescue from afar.
What is more, such is the strength and subtlety of these blessed spirits that they make their own suggestions appear to us as our own thoughts; or rather they make them to be our own thoughts, our own impressions, for which we shall get the glory, the good renown before God and man.
In the practical world, the wise counselor will often do a hidden thing. He will so insinuate his own views into the mind of one he is advising, that the man will feel sure the new thought is coming from the hidden recesses of his own mind.
Angelic advice and assistance is cut from that very same cloth. It is not important for us to know where the illumination is coming from. It is important to know how to accept the wisdom of that angelic voice.
‘Para iluminar y custodiar’
Para iluminar y custodiar, para gobernar y guiar": así decía la oración milenaria, la oración a esos ángeles que llamamos nuestros Guardianes.
Estos ángeles no están hechos para nosotros, sino que nosotros estamos hechos para ellos. Su acción protectora y protectora tiene un solo objetivo: hacernos dignos de ellos, dignos de vivir un día en su compañía. Nos protegen haciendo tres cosas por nosotros.
En primer lugar, tienen y utilizan un conocimiento íntimo y completo de cada uno de nosotros. Su conocimiento va más allá de lo que normalmente sabe un ángel sobre las cosas creadas: llega incluso a los secretos de nuestro corazón humano.
En segundo lugar, compensan lo que falta en nuestras propias decisiones: tienen una voluntad fija de ayudarnos, siempre cuando es necesario y, a menudo, cuando simplemente nos resulta útil.
En tercer lugar, hay un qué y un cómo de sus acciones sutiles en nuestro nombre que sería bueno que supiéramos. Sólo necesitan pensar en nosotros, y están aquí con nosotros, actuando poderosamente para nosotros, estas misteriosas criaturas del mundo de los espíritus. Y nuestros teólogos siempre nos han dicho que actúan especialmente donde tendemos a fallar.
Hay alguna acción angelical que está fuera de nosotros: nos mantiene a salvo de cualquier peligro amenazador que sólo una inteligencia superior podría ver; o da forma a las condiciones que contribuirán a nuestra felicidad última, las circunstancias que requerirían un genio más que humano para arreglarlas.
También hay alguna acción angelical que está dentro de nosotros: el ángel encuentra allí, en nuestras mentes y en nuestros corazones, suficiente espacio para la actividad que sólo él puede producir: ver cosas nuevas que nunca antes habíamos soñado; elegir sabiamente en asuntos particulares donde se requiere decisión, aplicar las reglas prácticas, por así decirlo; y ver y elegir cuando no hay reglas estrictas y rápidas disponibles, y nuestros apetitos más bajos amenazan con hundirnos, alejarnos del bien que Él quiere para nosotros y ahogarnos.
Tal es este don de Dios al hombre y a la mujer, este don extraordinario: tal es el Ángel de la Guarda. Pero, ¿apreciaremos siempre esta “ayuda externa” una vez que la sepamos?
Normalmente no, me temo. A menudo seremos incapaces de detectar esta nueva idea, este fragmento de sabio consejo, este débil impulso de ir hacia la izquierda en lugar de hacia la derecha... a menudo estas cosas nos tomarán desprevenidos y se nos escaparán.
De lo contrario, sería una pérdida grave para nuestra vida moral madura. Si tuviéramos dentro de nosotros, clara y distintamente, el pensamiento y la decisión de alguien externo a nosotros, sería imposible vivir una vida moral seria, responsabilizarnos de lo que pensamos y de lo que hacemos. Nos reduciría a meros autómatas, esperando el próximo rescate desde lejos.
Es más, tal es la fuerza y sutileza de estos espíritus bienaventurados, que hacen parecernos sus propias sugerencias como nuestros propios pensamientos; o más bien los convierten en nuestros propios pensamientos, nuestras propias impresiones, por las cuales obtendremos la gloria, el buen renombre ante Dios y los hombres.
En el mundo práctico, el consejero sabio a menudo hará algo oculto. Insinuará de tal manera sus propios puntos de vista en la mente de aquel a quien está aconsejando, que éste se sentirá seguro de que el nuevo pensamiento proviene de los rincones ocultos de su propia mente.
El consejo y la asistencia angelical están cortados de esa misma tela. No es importante para nosotros saber de dónde viene la iluminación. Es importante saber aceptar la sabiduría de esa voz angelical.
