At the heart of every healthy society and culture we find the presence of the good, the true, and the beautiful.
Our own troubled society, and the shards of its culture lead me to wonder just what they are, those signs, and where have they gone in our day.
Our liturgical year has led us through Lent, and Holy Week, to Easter yet again, and so we have been reminded yet again that those three signs are the very marks of the person who is Jesus Christ. He told us that he was, in fact, way and truth and life. (John: 14: 6)
He is the Way of goodness, which is to say that he is the fullness of virtue made concrete in love; he is the Truth, which is to say that he is the end to which all right thinking points us; and he is the very life of Beauty, which is to say that he makes all creation radiant as the Word-made-Flesh, as the poem that perfectly mirrors the Poet from whom he was sent into our broken world.
These are the things we believe about him, this Jesus Christ: these are the things we have come to see in him over these two thousand years of thinking on him, and praying with him.
The more Christ is present in the soul of a culture or a society, the more such a society or culture will truly reflect the goodness, truth, and beauty of his own image.
So, I will not say that this cannot happen, even if it does not happen quite the way we restless and impatient Americans want it to happen. It is hard to get our heads around how praying with the heart really works.
But we can save that for another time. It is enough for now to wish you and your families a blessed Easter: an abundance of that goodness, that truth, and that beauty.
El poema y el poeta
En el corazón de toda sociedad y cultura sana encontramos la presencia del bien, la verdad y la belleza.
Nuestra propia sociedad atribulada y los fragmentos de su cultura me llevan a preguntarme qué son esos signos y adónde han ido a parar en nuestros días.
Nuestro año litúrgico nos ha conducido, a través de la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa, a la Pascua una vez más, y así hemos recordado una vez más que esos tres signos son las marcas mismas de la persona que es Jesucristo. Él nos dijo que era, de hecho, camino, verdad y vida. (Juan 14,6)
Él es el Camino de la bondad, es decir, la plenitud de la virtud hecha realidad en el amor; él es la Verdad, es decir, el fin al que nos señala todo pensamiento recto; y él es la vida misma de la Belleza, es decir, que hace que toda la creación brille como la Palabra hecha carne, como el poema que refleja perfectamente al Poeta que lo envió a nuestro mundo roto. Estas son las cosas que creemos sobre él, este Jesucristo: estas son las cosas que hemos llegado a ver en él a lo largo de estos dos mil años de pensar en él y orar con él.
Cuanto más presente esté Cristo en el alma de una cultura o sociedad, más reflejará dicha sociedad o cultura la bondad, la verdad y la belleza de su propia imagen.
Así que no diré que esto no pueda suceder, aunque no suceda exactamente como nosotros, los estadounidenses inquietos e impacientes, deseamos. Es difícil comprender cómo funciona realmente orar con el corazón.
Pero podemos dejar eso para otra ocasión. Por ahora, basta con desearles a ustedes y a sus familias una feliz Pascua: abundancia de esa bondad, esa verdad y esa belleza.
