St. Teresa of Avila
We remembered St. Teresa of Avila on 15 October. She had a firmer hold on the Christian Faith than we do. She went to the heart of it with an unerring instinct.
Her autobiography put it this way: the Father desires that all grace must come to us from the hands of Christ,” through his own sacred humanity,” in which God takes delight.
Many, many times I have perceived this through experience, she says. The Lord has told me this. I have definitely seen that we must enter by this gate.
And, she draws a crucial conclusion from this experience. A person should desire no other path, even if he is at the summit of contemplation. On this road he walks safely.
I call this conclusion “crucial” because it is the decisive thing, because it resolves and settles a question, and because it goes against the grain of our day. We don’t really want to spend time with our dusty old Bibles. We don’t really want to spend time with our messy old Churches. We don’t want to be held back by any corporation, or government, or church. We want to be free. We want to be, not religious, but spiritual.
In doing this, we run from the design of the Father. We run from the Incarnation. We run from the real Jesus. We run from the People he gathered to himself. We favor a cloudy, ethereal, Christ, not the poor, unlovely, Jesus of Nazareth with dust on his feet.
A “crucial” conclusion, this. That word comes from the word Crux. And that means Cross. And that means Eucharist. And that’s what the Lord told Teresa.
Santa Teresa de Avila
El 15 de octubre recordamos a Santa Teresa de Avila. Ella tuvo una esperanza firme en la Fe Cristiana más que nosotros. Ella fue al centro de esto con un instinto indudable.
Su Autobiografia la puso de esta manera”el Padre desea que toda la gracia debe llegar a nosotros por las manos de Cristo”, por medio de su propia santa humanidad”en la que Dios se deleita. Muchos, muchos tiempos he percibido esto por medio de la experiencia, dice. El Señor me ha dicho esto. Definitivamente he visto que debemos entrar por esta puerta.
Y ella hace una conclusión de esta experiencia. Una persona no debe desear ningún otro camino, aunque el sea la cumbre de la contemplación. En su camino, él camina seguro.
Llamo esta conclusión “crucial” porque es la cosa decisiva, porque resuelve y establece una pregunta, y porque esta va en contra del grano de nuestro día. Nosotros realmente no deseamos pasar tiempo con nuestra viejas Biblias empolvadas. Nosotros realmente no queremos pasar tiempo con nuestras viejas y desordenadas Iglesias. No queremos que nos atrasen cualquiera corporacion o gobierno, o iglesia. Queremos ser libres. Queremos ser, no religiosos pero espirituales.
En hacer esto, corremos del diseño de nuestro Padre. Corremos de la Encarnación. Nos alejamos del Jesús verdadero. Nos alejamos de la Gente que él mismo reunió. Favorecemos a un Cristo confuso, etéreo, no el pobre, el desamado, Jesús de Nazaret con polvo en sus pies.
Una conclusión “crucial”: que la palabra viene de Crux, que significa Cruz. Y esto significa Eucaristía. Y eso es lo que el Señor le dijo a Teresa.
