A blessed Christmas season
Advent is the season of waiting, and the real things we wait for are from the spiritual world. Our Catholic Faith binds us to accept things from this world that are beyond the reach of Imagination, and it will not allow imagination to reject them.
It is here that Imagination does its subtlest piece of sabotage, as Frank Sheed put it. It cannot prevent the intellect from accepting these things offered by Faith, so it offers to help the intellect in accepting them.
It does so in the only way it knows how: it offers all sorts of mental pictures, many comparisons from the material world. With the Doctrine of the Trinity, for example, it may offer the picture of a shamrock, or a picture of a triangle, or a picture of three drops of water poured together to make one drop. And there is real value in imagination’s help of this kind.
But, in the end, no comparison sheds any real light on the innermost being of God himself. That’s what things from the material world cannot touch. That’s what imagination cannot conjure up. The excuse for using these mental pictures is that they help us “see” the Doctrine. But they do not. They only help us “swallow” the Doctrine.
They do that by substituting something else for the Doctrine. The substitution is not the Doctrine itself, nor is it the Reality itself behind the Doctrine. We find ourselves settling for some vague picture: it saves us from thinking, it stops thought, but it does not allow the Truth of God to be a light for our minds.
Imagination’s help becomes as deadly, then, as Imagination’s censoring: it stops us from penetrating the Reality of God through the use of solid doctrine. And this is what we must do if we are to get anywhere with the Reality of God. A blessed Christmas Season.
Una Bendita Temporada Navideña
El Adviento es la temporada de espera, y las cosas reales que esperamos son del mundo espiritual. Nuestra Fe Católica nos obliga a aceptar las cosas de este mundo que están fuera del alcance de la imaginación y no permitirá que la imaginación la rechacé.
Es aquí que la Imaginación hace su parte más sutil de sabotaje, como Frank Sheed lo puso. No puede prevenir el intelecto de aceptar estas cosas ofrecidas por la Fe, por lo tanto ofrece ayudar a la inteligencia en aceptarlo.
Lo hace de la única manera que sabe: ofrece todo tipo de imágenes mentales, muchas comparaciones del mundo material. Con la Doctrina de la Trinidad, por ejemplo, puede ofrecer una imagen de un trébol o una imagen de un triángulo o una imagen de tres gotas de agua juntadas para hacer una gota. Y hay valor real en la ayuda de la imaginación de este tipo.
Pero, al final, no comparación arroja alguna luz real en el ser más íntimo de Dios mismo. Eso es algo que el mundo material no puede tocar. Eso es lo que la imaginación no puede evocar. La excusa para usar estas imágenes mentales es que nos ayudan a “ver” la Doctrina. Pero no lo hacen. Solo nos ayudan a “absorber” la Doctrina.
Lo hacen por substituir otra cosa para la Doctrina. La sustitución no es la doctrina de sí mismo, ni es la propia Realidad detrás de la Doctrina. Nos encontramos conformándonos con cualquier imagen vaga: nos salva del pensamiento pero no permite que la Verdad de Dios sea una luz para nuestras mentes.
La ayuda de la Imaginación se convierte en algo mortal, después, mientras la Imaginación censura: nos impide penetrar la Realidad de Dios por el uso de doctrina sólida. Y esto es lo que debemos hacer si queremos llegar a donde sea con la Realidad de Dios. Una Bendita Temporada Navideña.
