The human 'will'
We have an on-the-way-being, you and I. We are pilgrims in our bones and blood. This means that we are always going somewhere. This means that in this life we are always unfinished.
That’s why there is so much Desire in us: physical desire, relational desire, emotional desire, spiritual desire. We need, we human creatures, so many ways. We want, we human creatures, so many things.
The human Will is the spiritual form of that desire. It is the spiritual power that surpasses all other human powers (senses, imagination, memory, mind), and it is meant to help order them.
The human will is our power of living simple Human Dignity. It is our power of Freedom. It is our power of Decision. It is our power of Love. Along with intelligence, it is the thing that makes us most like God. When it goes right, all goes right.
But the human will is also the power of Egoism, of stubborn me-first, my-way, self-love. It is the power of self-deceit. It is the power of control, and domination. It is the power of disregard and disrespect for others. It is the power of Division. It is the power of War, and of destruction, and of discouragement. When it goes wrong in these ways, all goes wrong.
If the Will is fundamentally right, then a man is good through and through. He is not only a good plumber, or a good teacher, or a good Doctor: he is a Good Man, period.
If the Will is wrong, if it is not inclined to the true good of the human person, then she may be a good student, a good nurse, a good mother, a good painter, a good musician, but she is not a Good Woman, period.
To regulate the Will is to regulate the entire person. Here is the key to authentic human living. And this can be done, through patient human effort, and through the surprising help of Grace.
Tenemos una forma de ser-por-el-camino, tu y yo. Somos peregrinos en nuestros huesos y sangre. Esto significa que siempre estamos yendo a algún lugar. Esto significa que en esta vida siempre estamos inacabados.
Por eso hay tanto Deseo en nosotros: deseo físico, deseo relacional, deseo emocional, deseo espiritual. Necesitamos, nosotros criaturas humanas, tantas cosas. Queremos, nosotros criaturas humanas, muchas cosas.
La Voluntad humana es la forma espiritual del deseo. Es el poder espiritual que supera todos otros poderes humanos (sentidos, imaginación, memoria, mente), y tiene el propósito de ayudar a pedirlos.
La voluntad humana es nuestro poder de vida de Dignidad Humana simple. Es nuestro poder de Libertad. Es nuestro poder de Decisión. Es nuestro poder de Amor. Junto con la inteligencia, es lo que nos hace más como Dios. Cuando va bien, todo va bien.
Pero la voluntad humana también es el poder del Egoísmo, de terco yo-primero, de-mi-manera, amor-propio. Es el poder de contraproducente. Es el poder de control, y dominación. Es el poder de la indiferencia y falta de respeto por los demás. Es el poder de la división. Es el poder de guerra, destrucción y del desánimo. Cuando algo sale mal en estos aspectos, todo sale mal.
Si la Voluntad es fundamentalmente correcta, entonces el hombre es bueno por completo. No sólo es un buen plomero, o buen maestro, o buen doctor: él es un Buen Hombre, punto.
Si la Voluntad es incorrecta, si no está inclinada hacia el verdadero bien de la persona humana, entonces ella puede ser un buen estudiante, una buena enfermera, una buena madre, una buena artista, un buen músico, pero ella no es Mujer Buena, punto.
Para regular la voluntad es regular a la persona entera. Aquí está la clave para una vida humana autentica. Y esto se puede hacer, a través del esfuerzo paciente humano, y por la sorprendente ayuda de la Gracia.
