The Flesh, the World, and the Devil
From her earliest days, our Church has been keenly aware of three constant enemies: the Flesh, the World, and the Devil. These have always been at her, to lead her away from the path of Jesus Christ.
The first is the Enemy-Within: things coming from inside us, our own scattered, and scattering, desires. The second and the third are the Enemy-Without: things coming from outside us that play on our own warring desires and weaknesses.
Might we look for a time at one of these, at this world spoken of so often in our Spiritual Tradition?
When St. John writes of the World in his Gospel, he does not mean all the women and men of the earth: the Lord takes delight in them, he sent his Son to save them, and to make them into the new People of God. He means, rather, all those women and men who oppose Jesus Christ, and who are thus unwitting slaves of flesh, and world, and devil.
Those who do not believe, those who are indifferent, those who are hardened sinners, those who are worldly to the core: John and all our Spiritual Tradition after him have these in mind. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before you (John 15: 18).
This world worms its way into the hearts of all our families. All of us are touched by it. All of us are blinded by it. All of us are broken by it.
Our 2000 years of struggling to remain faithful in such a world has left us alert, and wary, and on the watch for the ways this world works upon us. Its preferred way of winning us over is to seduce us, our ancestors thought, to distract us with the velvet glove. When that doesn’t work, it will take the soft glove off the hard fist, to intimidate us, to terrorize us even.
Look around, and you will see both these tactics at work even in friendly Kansas, as they are in the country as a whole. We shall take them apart one by one in the weeks ahead.
La Carne, el Mundo, y el Diablo
Desde sus primeros tiempos, nuestra Iglesia ha tenido claro que hay tres enemigos constantes: la Carne, el Mundo, y el Diablo. Estos siempre han estado en contra ella, para desviarla del camino de Jesucristo.
El primero es el Enemigo-Del Interior: cosas que vienen del interior de nosotros, nuestros propios esparcidos, y esparciéndose, deseos. El segundo y el tercero es el Enemigo- Sin El: cosas que vienen de fuera que juegan con nuestros enfrentados deseos y debilidades.
¿Podemos ver por un momento a uno de estos, a este mundo del cual tanto se habla en nuestra Tradición Espiritual?
Cuando San Juan escribe sobre el Mundo en su Evangelio, él no se refiere a todas las mujeres y a todos los hombres de esta tierra: el Señor se complace en ellos, el mando a su Hijo para salvarlos, y para convertirlos en el nuevo Pueblo de Dios. Más bien se refiere a todas esas mujeres y a todos esos hombres que se oponen a Jesucristo, y que en consecuencia son esclavos sin querer de la carne, del mundo, y del diablo.
Aquellos que no creen, aquellos que son indiferentes, aquellos que son pecadores empedernidos, y aquellos que son del mundo hasta el alma: a todos estos son a los que tienen en mente Juan y toda nuestra Tradición Espiritual después de él. Si el mundo los odia, sepan que antes me odio a mí. (Juan 15:18).
Este mundo entra como un gusano en los corazones de nuestras familias. Todos estamos afectados por el. Todos estamos cegados por él. Todos estamos quebrantados por él.
Nuestros 2000 años de luchar por seguir fieles en tal mundo nos ha dejado alertas, y cautelosos, y en vigilia de las maneras en que este mundo trabaja sobre nosotros. Su manera preferida de ganarnos es seduciéndonos, pensaban nuestros antepasados, el distraernos con el guante de terciopelo. Cuando eso no funciona, se quita el guante suave de su puño duro, para intimidarnos, hasta para aterrorizarnos.
Vean a su alrededor, y van a ver a estas dos tácticas trabajando hasta en el agradable Kansas, porque están en el país como una sola. Vamos a separarlas una por una en las siguientes semanas.
