'In this way, the world seduces us'
We began thinking about the “World” last time. Our Spiritual Tradition defined this as the women and men opposed to Jesus Christ, and it described how they affect us, drawing us away from the path of Christ. Their preferred way is to seduce us.
They do this by proposing their view of the world and all that is in it as a replacement for the Christian view. Their assumptions replace the assumptions of the Gospel. Their maxims replace the maxims of the Gospel. A Canadian philosopher described it well several years ago.
They assume that the Will is absolute. They place Will before Reason, thus inverting the natural order. This means that they approve making choices that do not square with reason. This is behind the “pro-choice” movement. This has a strong appeal for those who cannot defend their choices on the basis of reason. This also sabotages reasoned debate.
They assume that Pleasure is paramount. They put pleasure ahead of the person, thus turning him into a mere object. She thus becomes a mere tool for the pleasure of someone else. Consequently, love, marriage, the building up of society, all these are compromised in the process, because all these require the ability to postpone pleasure. Pleasure has its place, but it cannot come before the dignity of the human person.
They assume that Society is perfectible. Through rigorous political structuring, “imperfect women and men” can build a “perfect” society. To have this ideal society, we will have to suppress any trace of individuality. Dissent, debate, and discussion will have to be outlawed. We have had sharp examples of this in the totalitarian governments of our time. We see strong traces of this in our own day.
They assume that Suffering is Unbearable. And they have thus had a major influence on the legalization of euthanasia. But this is incompatible with the effort to improve care, to instill courage, and to awaken hope. They are the apostles of the easy road, which is for them the cessation of all pain, difficulty, and discomfort, ending in a death they themselves control. They utterly despise Christianity, a religion that finds meaning in suffering.
These ideas have become part of the common sense of the world. Everyone knows them. Everyone accepts them. Everyone acts on them. Everyone dismisses those who think otherwise. In this way, the world seduces us.
'De esta manera, el mundo nos seduce'
Empezamos a pensar en el “Mundo” la última vez. Nuestra Tradición Espiritual define esto como las mujeres y los hombres en contra de Jesucristo y como describió como nos afecta, alejándonos de nuestro camino de Jesucristo. Su método preferido es de seducirnos.
Hacen esto al proponer su visión del mundo y todo lo que está en el como un reemplazo para el punto de vista Cristiano. Sus supuestos sustituyen las asunciones del Evangelio. Sus máximas sustituyen las máximas del Evangelio. Un filósofo canadiense lo describió bien hace varios años.
Suponen que la Voluntad es absoluta. Ponen la voluntad antes de la Razón, invirtiendo así el orden natural. Esto significa que aprueban las opciones que no están de acuerdo con la razón. Esto está detrás del movimiento “pro-elección”. Esto tiene un llamamiento fuerte a los que no pueden defender sus opciones en la base de la razón. Esto también sabotea debate razonado.
Suponen que el placer es primordial. Ponen el placer delante de la persona, convirtiéndolo en un mero objeto. Ella entonces se convierte en un mero instrumento para el placer de alguien más. Por consiguiente el amor, matrimonio, la edificación de la sociedad, todos estos requieren la capacidad de aplazar el placer. El placer tiene su lugar, pero no puede venir antes de la dignidad de la persona humana.
Suponen que la Sociedad es perfectible. A través de la estructuración política rigurosa, “hombres y mujeres imperfectos” pueden crear una sociedad “perfecta”. Para tener esta sociedad ideal, tendremos que suprimir cualquier rastro de la individualidad. Disidencia, debate y discusión debe prohibirse. Hemos tenido fuertes ejemplos de esto en los gobiernos totalitarios de nuestro tiempo. Vemos una fuerte rastros de esto en nuestros días.
Suponen que el Sufrimiento es Insoportable. Y han tenido así una influencia principal en la legalización de eutanasia. Pero esto es incompatible con el esfuerzo de mejorar el cuidado, para infundir ánimo y despertar la esperanza. Son los apóstoles del camino fácil, que es para ellos el cese de todo el dolor, dificultad e incomodidad, que termina en una muerte que ellos mismos controlan. Completamente desprecian el Cristianismo, una religión que encuentra el sentido en el sufrimiento.
Estas ideas se han hecho parte del sentido común del mundo. Cada uno lo sabe. Cada uno los acepta. Cada uno los afecta. Cada uno despide a aquellos que piensan de otra manera. De esta manera, el mundo nos seduce.
