The God of Variety
How about a little “angelic entertainment” this week? That’s what a modern writer called the incredible variety among the angels.
There are many names for the angels in the Bible, as you know, and in the early 6th century a wondrously inventive man worked with those names to give us a view that fascinates still. The society or communion of angels is divided into three Hierarchies, he wrote, and each of these into three Choirs or orders of angels.
From the top down, in the first tier, there were the Seraphim, the Cherubim, and the Thrones. In the second tier, there were the Dominions, the Virtues, and the Powers. In the third tier, were the Principalities, the Archangels, and the Angels.
All are Angels, that’s their family name. All are purely spiritual creatures, minds-without-bodies. All see the God who made them. But they see him in different ways. Some see more, others see less. This seeing of theirs determines where they are placed.
From the bottom up, the third tier is bent on carrying out God’s plan for the created world (Angels, Archangels, Principalities): they work with the particular creatures and the particular causes to make sure that God’s will is done. The second tier is bent on carrying out God’s plan for the created world as a whole (Powers, Virtues, Dominions): they work with the most universal causes, the means of ordering all creation. The third tier is bent on the God behind all these particular and universal causes (Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim): they are bent on nothing, they are simply lost in wonder at seeing God as he is in himself.
There is variety in God’s creation. You and I see this on all sides in the visible world. Why wouldn’t the God of Variety make it the same in the invisible world?

¿Qué les parece un pequeño “entretenimiento angelical”? Esto es lo que un escritor moderno llamó a la increible variedad de ángeles.
Hay muchos nomres de ángeles en la Biblia, como ustdes saben, y a principios del siglo Sexto, un hombre maravilloso inventor, trabajó con aquellos nombres para darnos un vistazo que aún fascina. La sociedad o comunión de ángeles está dividada en tres Jerarquias, el escribió, y cada una de estas en tres Coros u órdenes de ángeles. De arriba hacia abajo,en la primera hilera, estaban los Serafínes, los Querubines, y los Tronos. En la segunda hilera, estaban los Dominios, las Virtudes y los Poderes. En la tercera hilera, estaban las Principalidades, los Arcángeles, y los Angeles.
Todos son Angeles, ese es su apellido. Todas son puras criaturas espirituales, mentes-sin cuerpos. Todos ven al Dios quien los creó. Pero ellos lo ven en diferentes maneras. Algunos ven más, otros ven menos. Esta vista de ellos, determina a donde los situaron.
De abajo hacia arriba, la tercera hilera está inclinada en llevar el plan de Dios para el mundo creado (Angeles, Arcángeles, Principados): ellos trabajan con criaturas y causas particulaes para asegurarse que la voluntad de Dios se cumpla. La segunda hilera está inclinada a llevar el plan de Dios para el mundo creado en su plenitud (Poderes, Virtudes. Dominios): ellos trabajan con las causas más universales, los significados de ordenación de toda la creación. La tercera hilera se,inclina en Dios detrás de todas estas causas particulares y universales (Tronos, Querubines,Serafines): ellos están inclinados en la nada, ellos están simplemente perdidos pensando ver a Dios tal como Él es.
Hay una variedad en la creación de Dios. Ustedes y yo lo vemos en todos los lados en el mundo visible. ¿Por qué el Dios de la Variedad no haría lo mismo en el mundo invisible?
