Surrender of self
A sower went out to sow, Jesus said in St. Mark’s Gospel (4: 1-20), describing why He was sent by the Father. Each priest of Jesus Christ knows it all, because he has been it all.
The path, he has been on it, in too much of a hurry to stop, to attend to the fallen seed. The rock, he has been on it, too busy about himself and his many projects, to let it take root. The weeds, he has been too much in them, knowing too well how wealth, and position, and power, and honors can choke off the Word. The rich earth, he has been that too, which is why he remains at his often thankless task.
And what about you? The Lord has been sowing in your field as well. What is he finding there? Any rich earth? At all? It may be that no one of us really knows, neither priest nor parishioner.
Our life with God is all Mystery. And how could it be otherwise? He is all Mystery in himself, after all. We are mostly mystery in ourselves as well. You will enter into these mysteries when you are open to the Adventure of Love.
That adventure depends on two things. It depends on where he wants to take us. It depends on how willing we are to be taken there. The whole story of His freedom, the whole story of our freedom, the whole adventure of the spiritual life unfolds from these two things.
Now, you won’t know where He wants to take you unless you get to know him personally (the Real God now, not the false gods of your upbringing, your training, your culture, your sins). And you get to know him personally in deep prayer alone.
Now, you won’t get to know him in this way unless you are willing to give yourself over into his hands. Surrender of self is the crucial thing.
La entrega de sí mismo
Un sembrador salió a sembrar, Jesús dijo en el Evangelio de San Marcos (4:1-20), describiendo como Él había sido enviado por el Padre. Cada sacerdote de Jesucristo sabe todo, porque lo ha sido todo.
El camino, él ha estado ahí, muy apresurado para poder parar, y atender la semilla que ha caído. La piedra, él ha estado en ella, muy ocupado con sí mismo y sus proyectos, para dejarla dar raíces. Los espinos, él ha estado en ellos bastante, sabiendo muy bien como la riqueza, posición, poder, y honores pueden sofocar la Palabra. La tierra buena, él también la ha sido, es por eso que permanece en esa tarea que no se agradece mucho.
¿Y tú? El Señor ha estado sembrando en tu campo también. ¿Qué está encontrando ahí? ¿Tierra buena? ¿O nada? Puede ser que ninguno de nosotros realmente lo sabe, ni un sacerdote o feligrés.
Nuestra vida con Dios es todo Misterio. ¿Y cómo pudiera ser de otra manera? Después de todo, Él es todo Misterio en sí mismo. Nosotros también somos por la mayor parte un misterio en nosotros mismos. Entraran en esos misterios cuando estén abiertos a la Aventura del Amor.
Esa aventura depende de dos cosas. Depende de a donde él nos quiera llevar. Y depende de que tan dispuestos estemos a ser llevados ahí. Toda la historia de Su libertad, toda la historia de nuestra libertad, toda la aventura de nuestra vida espiritual se desenvuelve de estas dos cosas.
Ahora, no van a poder saber a donde los quiera llevar El a menos de que lo conozcan personalmente (el Verdadero Dios de ahora, no los dioses falsos de tu niñez, de tu enseñanza, de tu cultura, de tus pecados). Y lo llegan a conocer personalmente solamente en oración profunda.
No lo llegaras a conocer de esta manera a menos de que te encomiendes a sus manos. La entrega de sí mismo es la cosa decisiva.
