We are made by God; we are made for God
The Liturgy put these words in our minds and in our mouths on the feast of St. Scholastica, and thus caught the essence of the woman herself: With my whole being I worship Christ. I long for him and desire to be with him forever. (First Antiphon, Morning Prayer)
What was true of her was also true of other women and men in the 500 years before her, and in the 1500 years after her. Some in the midst of the Church have always been called to serve the Lord in what we now know as the Consecrated Life.
They have been touched by Christ, healed by Christ, and mesmerized by Christ. This experience has been so strong and so deep that they can see nothing but Christ. With every nerve (physical, emotional, spiritual), they long for him, and him only. This love is so compelling that they forsake all else in order to wait for him coming.
Consecrated women and men thus have pride of place in our Church. They are flesh and blood witnesses of a primal truth of our Faith: namely, that we are made by God, and we are made for God … by Love, and for Love. They live that singular adventure even now in our kaleidoscopic world. They would have us think deeper thoughts, then, of something larger than we are: where we come from, and where we are going.
Que fuimos creados por Dios, y que fuimos creados para Dios
La Liturgia colocó estas palabras en nuestras mentes y en nuestras bocas en la Fiesta de Santa Escolástica, y así captó la esencia de la mujer misma: Libremente confieso a Cristo; de Cristo está sedienta mi alma; deseo estar por siempre con Cristo.
Lo que era cierto de ella también era cierto de otras mujeres y hombres en los 500 años antes de ella, y en los 1500 años después de ella. Algunos cercanos a la Iglesia, siempre han sido llamados a servir al Señor en lo que ahora conocemos como la Vida Consagrada.
Ellos han sido tocados por Cristo, sanados por Cristo, y fascinados por Cristo. Esta experiencia ha sido tan fuerte y tan profunda que no pueden ver más nada que Cristo. Con cada nervio (físico, emocional, espiritual), están sedientos de él, de el solamente. Este amor es tan apasionante que abandonan todo para esperar su venida.
Mujeres y hombres consagrados tienen un lugar de orgullo en nuestra Iglesia. Ellos son testigos de carne y sangre de una verdad principal de nuestra Fe: concretamente, que fuimos creados por Dios, y que fuimos creados para Dios... por Amor, y para el Amor. Aun hoy, ellos viven esa singular aventura en nuestro mundo de caleidoscopio. Ellos nos hacen pensar más profundamente, sobre algo más que grande que nosotros: de dónde venimos, y hacia dónde vamos.
