‘Make it your very own’
Holy Week is gone now, with all its natural and supernatural drama. Before we put it away in the attic until next year, we might linger longer over some of its substance.
After the Fall, the Lord could have written the human race off as a failure. At that moment, we were. We made our choice, and He could have left us to our own devices, to fend for ourselves. It would have been simple for Him.
After the Fall, the Lord could have forgiven our sin, with no further questions asked, with no conditions imposed. It would have been simple for Him.
But He chose to do neither of these. After the Fall, He chose that the sin done in human nature, should be undone in human nature. It was only right. It was only fair. It was only just. It was poetic justice even. This was exquisitely simple for Him.
For the act by which Christ redeemed us was a wholly human act. The life He offered was his human life. The suffering He endured was in His body, mind, and spirit. The death He sustained was the separation of His soul and body. In this way, He undid what had been done.
How could that be possible, you say? Because the person who did the undoing was wholly God, the Second Person of the Trinity. That’s what gave the act an infinite value. That’s what permitted it to touch every man and woman of every time and place.
Rejoice in that this Easter Season, and ask the Lord for the grace to make it your very own.
‘Hacerla propia’
La Semana Santa ya se fue, junto con ella todo su drama natural y sobrenatural. Antes de guardarla hasta el año que entra, podríamos tal vez mantener viva por un poco más alguna de su substancia.
Después de la Caída, el Señor pudo haber declarado que la raza humana era un fracaso total. En ese momento, si lo éramos. Hicimos nuestra propia elección, y nos pudo haber dejado a nuestros propios medios, para defendernos por cuenta propia. Esto hubiera sido algo simple para él.
Después de la Caída, el Señor pudo haber perdonado nuestro pecado, sin hacer ninguna pregunta más, sin imponer ninguna condición. Esto hubiera sido algo simple para él.
Pero el escogió no hacer ni uno ni el otro. Después de la Caída, el escogió que el pecado hecho en la naturaleza humana, debería ser deshecho en la naturaleza humana. Era lo correcto. Era lo justo. Hasta era justicia poética. Esto era algo exquisitamente simple para él.
Por qué el acto por el cual Cristo nos redimió era por completo un acto humano. La vida que el ofreció era su vida humana. El sufrimiento que el soporto estaba en su cuerpo, mente, y espíritu. La muerte que el sufrió fue la separación de su alma y cuerpo. De esta manera, el deshizo lo que se había hecho.
¿Dice usted, como es esto posible? Porque la persona que lo deshizo era completamente Dios, la Segunda Persona de la Trinidad. Eso es lo que le dio al acto un valor infinito. Es lo que le permitió tocar a cada hombre y mujer de cualquier tiempo y lugar.
Regocíjense en esto esta Temporada de Pascua, y pídanle al Señor la gracia para hacerla propia.
